Gotta get a new job, and I wondered if they would want me to be up-to-date on the covid shots? Any hints on staying positive would be much appreciated too! I'd prefer an office job, but 4 years ago noticed they did not seem to like hiring people in their late 50s. And I hear so many contradictory things that I feel confused (and more negative!). Thanks so much!

No one likes dealing with bureaucracy, but some kinds of bureaucracy are easier to tolerate than others. It's no picnic for a kid to get their learner's permit, take driving lessons, complete a written driving exam and then take a driving test in order to get their license. The good news is that the driver's license system works. When your kid completes the steps, they'll get their driver's license. If only job-hunting were such a simple process! When you complete an online job application, you're guaranteed exactly nothing. You may get an interview and you may not. You may hear...

Hi FRiends, I am seriously considering a move to Austin, Texas this summer and I could use your help. In a nutshell, I am tired of the bleak and stagnant Chicago economic climate, the harsh Illinois winters and the Chicago machine. It’s time for a change in my life to find a new opportunity. I am a young marketing professional (30 years old) and have no wife or kids to provide for. Does anyone know of any good employment agencies in the Austin area to find some temporary or permanent work, so I can start my move down south? Any...

A very remarkable woman I know recently lost her job at a hospital, discriminated against because she was NOT a Muslim. Ironically, she became a refugee in America to escape Islamicist oppression; she was a Philippino trapped into servitude who came to work for an astonishingly high-ranking Muslim who took her to America... where she fled. Now she wants help on a resume, where she has listed her former employee. I'm afraid that without knowing her and her story, her claims of who she has worked for sound a little delusional. I was thinking that an "Accomplishments" section could sorta...

Job seekers asked to throw their privacy out the window For all the good it can do, social networking also has its share of downsides. Putting personal information of any kind on the internet raises plenty of privacy concerns on its own, and handing over your username and password can be like giving away the keys to your very identity. But if you're in the process of seeking new employment, that may be exactly what you'll have to do.The image below is a snapshot of an application from North Carolina for a clerical position at a police department. A massive network of employment Web sites - where any company can list job openings for free - launched this week over the protests of newspapers and online recruitment companies, who fear billions of dollars in lost revenue. The 40,000 sites, with Web addresses that all end in ".jobs," have the potential to upend companies such as Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com, which just a decade ago set up for-profit jobs classifieds online that roiled the media companies that printed the listings on paper. The initiative is being backed by nearly 600 hundred industry titans such as Google, American Express, IBM, Northrop...

Daphne Batts sometimes wonders if practical jokers with hidden cameras are spying on her as she interviews people for jobs at Bankrate Inc., an online publisher of financial information in North Palm Beach, Fla. That's because job candidates—including experienced professionals—behave so inappropriately that Ms. Batts, vice president of human resources, suspects she's the target of a prank. "I find myself peering out my blinds to see if Ashton Kutcher is on my office balcony with a camera crew," she says, referring to the host of the former MTV show "Punk'd," which featured pranks being played on celebrities. Of course, there's...

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Job hunters are facing a new trend: businesses asking recruitment companies to keep unemployed people out of their job pools. Peter May, of Atlanta, said he was hoping Orlando-based recruiter "The People Place" would help him find a job with Sony Ericsson. The company is moving its headquarters to Buckhead, which is located outside Atlanta. May said he was mortified when he read the message on the website. In all caps, and bold type, it said, "No unemployed candidates will be considered at all."

Job openings fell by nearly one-quarter last year as layoffs also soared Finding a job got much tougher last year, as the number of available openings fell by nearly one quarter. At the same time, the unemployed population soared by more than one-third, leaving more laid-off workers competing for fewer jobs. All told, there were 6.1 unemployed workers in December, on average, for every available position, according to Labor Department data released Tuesday. That's a sharp increase from 3.4 jobless workers per opening in December of 2008, and much worse than the 1.7 unemployed people per opening in December 2007,...

Frustrated Job Seekers Deciding To Call It Quits By CHRISTOPHER LEONARD, AP Business Writer February 6, 2010 Many jobless people have reached a conclusion that captures the depth of the unemployment crisis: Looking for a job is a waste of time. The economy is growing. Yet it's creating few jobs. That's why in the past eight months, 1.8 million people without jobs left the labor market. Many had grown so frustrated by their failure to find a job that they threw up their hands and quit looking for one. And it's why Barbara Bishop sat down at her kitchen table...

WALNUT CREEK — Almost a month after an internal probe pushed 50 immigrant workers out of their jobs at a downtown Target store, interviews with former and current store employees portray a mass firing that was selective, planned in advance and confusing to many of those forced out. Sparked by an allegation that illegal immigrants worked on the night shift, the Walnut Creek store last month attracted the attention of the Minneapolis corporate headquarters of the 1,700-store chain. The company sent a team to investigate, according to several people close to the incident. By the end of the second week...

Her parents redecorated the bedroom soon after she left for college, as sure as everyone else in Missoula that Melissa Meyer would not be moving back. They took down the photos of Melissa meeting the Dalai Lama and laughing alongside Vice President Joe Biden, placing them in the closet. They packed away dozens of high school honor certificates – valedictorian, class president, outstanding chemistry student – and stored them in plastic boxes under the bed. Melissa had always been too big for this town, her father liked to say. She was editor of the school newspaper, intern in the United...
