WASHINGTON - Setting aside political differences, the United States offered Iran temporary shelter to house up to 100,000 earthquake victims, the State Department said Friday. The offer came after President Bush said in Cancun, Mexico, that the administration was willing to send assistance despite the differences with Iran's Islamic government on its nuclear program and other issues. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns telephoned Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said. TEHRAN, Iran - Three strong earthquakes and several aftershocks jolted western Iran overnight, killing at least 66 people and injuring about 1,200 others, state television reported Friday. The initial quake of magnitude 4.7 struck a mountainous region in western Iran late Thursday. It was followed by a quake of magnitude 5.1 that struck Boroujerd and Doroud, two industrial cities in western Iran, at 11:06 p.m. local time Thursday, state television said. There were no immediate reports of casualties. A mild earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale jolted the suburbs of Iran's western city of Qasr-e-Shirin in Kermanshah province Thursday morning. According to the Kermanshah Seismological Network affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor hit the outskirts of the city at 5:11 hours local time (00:41 GMT). Upon a little research I find that last December 26th there was a horrific earthquake in Bam, Iran where upwards of 30-50K people died. Fast forward to a year later, December 26, 2004. The death toll is still rising. What makes on go hmmmm, is that both events happened right after Christmas and both events happend in areas where CHristianity is not prevelant. Does this mean anything? Who knows.
