A new study suggests that sudden infant death syndrome is caused by insufficient levels of a brain chemical that helps control breathing during sleep, HealthDay reports. Researchers looked at levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, and the enzyme trytophan hydroxylase, which makes serotonin, in 35 babies who died of SIDS. They found that serotonin levels were 26 percent lower and enzyme levels were 22 percent lower in babies who died of SIDS than in another group of babies who died of other causes. An Alaska woman, accused of killing her newborn baby boy at her parents’ Grand Junction home, gave birth at a neighbor’s home, wrapped him in a plastic garbage bag and left him in a tote bag in a closet that her parents found more than two months later, according to her arrest affidavit. Morgan Hite, 22, of Wasilla, Alaska, is in custody on a no-bond warrant, but she refused extradition to Grand Junction during a court hearing Wednesday in Palmer, Alaska. Black infants in major U.S. cities are up to five times more likely than white infants to die in their first year of life, the government reported Thursday. A 1995-98 study of the 60 largest U.S. cities found a median infant death rate of 13.9 deaths per 1,000 live births for blacks, compared with 6.4 for whites and 5.9 for Hispanics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
