    I've heard several talk show hosts talk about a recent (I think it's recent) study about how ill informed students were about history, for example not knowing who fought in Civil war, WWI, etc. I think Sean Hannity may have referred to it yesterday in his man in the street radio segment but I just heard the end of it. Unfortunately I've never been able catch any of the details of the study like the age group, the actual questions that were asked in the study and the actual statistics. Since Freepers are so well informed I'm hoping someone can...

    I'm sorry to trouble y'all, but we have some major geeks out there. I'm wanting to buy a TV tuner for my notebook and most say you have to have USB 2.0 for them to work properly. I've been all through Control Panel and can't find what my version is. How would I locate that? I am on a Dell Inspiron 2650 running Windows XP Pro. Any hints? Thanking you in advance!!!

    The California Assembly is betting that kids learn more with small books. Lawmakers voted Thursday to ban school districts from purchasing textbooks longer than 200 pages. The bill, believed to be the first of its kind nationwide, was hailed by supporters as a way to revolutionize education. Critics lambasted Assembly Bill 756 as silly. "This bill is really the epitome of micromanagement," said Assemblyman Keith Richman, R-Northridge. "(It's) absolutely ridiculous." "With all due respect," said Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, "this Legislature worries more about the rules than they do about whether children learn." But Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, a Los Angeles...

    TAJI, Iraq, May 18, 2005 — Hundreds of excited children gathered near a clinic as U.S. soldiers passed out school supplies, book bags and toys during a humanitarian mission to the Husseiniya section of northwest Baghdad near Camp Taji on May 7. WASHINGTON, May 16, 2005 – Iraqi army and Task Force Baghdad units captured nine terrorists and confiscated a variety of weapons and explosive materials May 15. In central Baghdad, a joint U.S.-Iraqi patrol captured a self-professed bomb maker along with $4,500 in U.S. currency in sequential $100 bills and washing machine timers that could be used to detonate bombs. Minutes later, Task Force Baghdad soldiers, acting on a tip from an Iraqi citizen, arrested five suspected terrorists thought to have participated in drive-by shootings in southeast Baghdad. Numerous cell phones, wires and bomb making materials were found with the suspects,...

  • Vanity: Outlook won't let me send mail

    Okay, here's the deal. Broadband (cable) internet with two PC's. His email works fine. He uses Netscape Mail. She uses Outlook, and can receive okay, but cannot send. Outlook gives an error message that the SMTP server timed out, to contact our ISP, but that can't be the true cause, since the other machine without Outlook works fine both coming and going. FWIW, the error number is 0x8004210B Any Outlook experts care to opine?

    NEW YORK, May 16, 2005 – The Orange County Choppers (OCC), in association with the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and the Fisher House Foundation, held an auction at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum on May 5. The famed biker trio of the Discovery Channel’s hit series, American Chopper, came up with the idea for the Support Our Troops auction after being inspired from a recent visit to the Walter Reed Medical Center, where they met wounded Marines and soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. “Before Christmas we went to Walter Reed Medical Center, and it had a great impact...
  • Iraqi Children Assist U.S. Soldiers in Baghdad

    ~~~snip~~~ In Baghdad, Iraqi children led Task Force Baghdad soldiers to a weapons cache. The children led the troopers to three rocket-propelled grenades and 10 fuses. An explosives ordnance disposal team was called to the site and safely detonated the munitions. "The majority of Iraqis do not support the insurgency," said Lt. Col. Clifford Kent, a Task Force Baghdad spokesman. "Most Iraqis want to give the new Iraqi government a chance to work, and that's why they're turning in these terrorists and their weapons." In combat operations conducted May 14, Iraqi soldiers captured seven terror suspects in eastern Baghdad. The...
    I'm in the market for a desktop replacement notebook that we can also watch TV on, but I'm not finding many that have built-in TV Tuners like some desktops have. I'm especially interested in a Dell or an HP, unless a FReeper can talk me into something else. But, I don't want to have to buy any bells/whistles that I don't really need, and I have no idea what to configure. Just based on my basic research, I'm thinking a good screen resolution and a large hard drive would be very important, and that I likely should go with a...
    Saddam spies 'offered to help Chirac get re-elected' By Francis Harris in Washington, Henry Samuel in Paris and David Rennie in Brussels (Filed: 14/05/2005) Saddam Hussein's spies planned a wide-ranging scheme to bribe members of the French political elite in the run-up to the Anglo-American invasion, including an offer to help fund President Jacques Chirac's 2002 re-election campaign. That bid failed, according to Iraqi secret service papers seen by The Daily Telegraph, when Mr Chirac's aides allegedly said they did not need the cash. Former EC president Jacques Delors According to the series of Iraqi intelligence service memorandums uncovered by...
