I'm sorry to trouble y'all, but we have some major geeks out there. I'm wanting to buy a TV tuner for my notebook and most say you have to have USB 2.0 for them to work properly.
I've been all through Control Panel and can't find what my version is. How would I locate that?
I am on a Dell Inspiron 2650 running Windows XP Pro.
Any hints? Thanking you in advance!!!
If I am not mistaken, you go to "start," then Help and Support. From there, you are at the Dell Support page and you must click on the subject (forget the name) to see a detailed report of all of the info about drivers, etc. that are on your system.
Step 1. Open manual
Step 2. Read specifications
My bad...bought the 'puter second-hand...no manual.
Try looking under Device Manager - right-click My Computer and choose "Manage" from the menu that appears. On the left side of the new window, click "Device Manager" and on the bottom right will be the USB root hub. Check in there.
The manuals are worthless as there is nothing in them that says what the specific items are. Let me look at mine.
Pretty much any newish laptop will be sporting USB 2.0.
YMMV, however.
and punch in the service tag. Voila, the complete specs for your machine.
If it's less than 4 years old, the odds are extremely high it is USB version 2. Version 1 is on older computers.
I just checked mine and it used to be listed there BUT it appears that Dell (in the background without my knowing) installed Dell Support Version 3 and now, I can't find all of the details of what is on my system. I should have a copy that I printed a long time ago somewhere.
Or, what if you go to the Dell site and enter your Asset Tag # which might also help you.
Plug in a device you know is 2.0, you will get a message if it is plugged into an older USB.
Plug in a thumb drive and copy a large file onto the drive. If it estimates a half-hour, it's ver. 1.1
The User Guide is online:

Yes, I have the same laptop, Inspiron 2650 and it has 1.1 USB. You can get a card that is USB 2.0 to put in to get the faster connection. I am looking at getting one soon.
Good luck.
My Inspiron 2650 has USB 1.1 (it's at least 2.5 years old)...
"How do I determine what version of USB I'm using?"
Then click on the first link.
Nothing has been definitive so far...sorry...I think you're right A. Goodwin...my puter is AT LEAST 3 years old.
Sorry...doesn't answer the question. Just takes you in circles and the Windows info page doesn't exist.
Google is NOT ALWAYS your friend....
