As News Weekly goes to press, the NZ Labour Government has rushed legislation into Parliament which will effectively legislate for gay marriage, through what are called "civil unions". The bill was tabled in Parliament on June 21, and MPs were expected to vote on it on July 23 or July 24. The bill creates a new form of legal relationship - a registered civil union - that would apply to same-sex relationships and heterosexual couples. Running alongside the Civil Union Bill will be the Relationships (Statutory References) Bill that removes discrimination based on marital status. It amends over 1000 provisions...

Recent findings that gays can go straight radically alters the debate on gay marriage, says David van Gend. The Titanic of Gay Rights, leaving all in its wake, is about to founder on a large and immovable fact. My concern is not for the glamorous first-class passengers - the prominent doctors and judges - or for the Mardi Gras exhibitionists leering and lurching across the deck, but for the unknown homosexuals down in their lonely cabins feeling sick. These are the ones who want to stop the ship and get off. The homosexuals who do not want to be homosexual,...

I'm trying to get a topic to appear under the Political Humor/Cartoons section, but even though I put that in as the thread's topic, it won't appear when I click on the Political Humor/Cartoons link. How do I get it there? Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Well, it's actually not my WININET.DLL file; it's my Dad's, which makes it even worse. I'm on my computer right now because his won't reach the Internet. If you computer experts want to skip the first few (irrelevant) paragraphs about how it happened, you can get straight to the point by going directly to the Maintenance Done, Error Messages, What I've Tried, and the My Bottomline Questions sections below. Any help you can give me will be appreciated greatly. I'm going to describe all the maintenance I did on his computer just in case you need it. And in an effort...

Saudis agree they need help to combat terrorists and calm expatriates By Robin Gedye in Jeddah (Filed: 28/06/2004) Saudi Arabia has agreed to improve security and to accept help from foreign troops in checkpoint controls after an unprecedented meeting between alarmed expatriates, western ambassadors and the Saudi foreign minister. The four-hour meeting, originally suggested by British Ambassador Sherard Cowper-Cole, assembled 40 expatriate employees and the ambassadors of the G8 countries plus 11 other nations in an ornate conference hall overlooking the Red Sea in the hope of stemming the flow of foreign workers fleeing attacks by extreme Islamists. James Oberwetter,...

The Free Staters have worked up what I like to think of as a sort of crude "Amazon.nh" It's a Wiki site that lists links to maybe a hundred New Hampshire businesses, encouraging NH residents and freedom lovers worldwide to buy from them. Obviously, there is no sales tax when you buy from NH so your purchase here helps keep your money out of the hands of government. For now we're listing pretty much any business in NH. If you know a NH merchant who isn't on the list (and there are many) please add them! Make whatever improvements you...

Contacted a company about refinancing on May 2nd. After 2 conversations, I was told that it could be done (my credit isn't A1); that I could get a reduced interest rate and get rid of the ARM that I currently have. Was told that if my appraisal came in at a certain amount or better, we could close within 19 days of him receiving the appraisal. The appraisal company held things up and he didn't get it until 5/21. In the meantime, he overnighted me a package containg a "good faith estimate". Nothing on the sheet was correct except for...

Please excuse the vanity (this is my first vanity post). I am having a problem with spyware. It started when my 11 year old son installed a "really cool" screensaver on the computer (running XP Home) from "screensaver.com". As soon as he told me he did that, I knew that I was up the creek without a paddle. So, I ran Spybot, and then Ad Aware, and "fixed" my Spyware problems. Right. Needless to say, my computer is still infested. I then did some searching on the web,and downloaded Hijack This, since my browser was hijacked to a different home...

An acquaintance of mine sent me the email below. She's a bit confused (pro-gun, pro-freedom, but a bit of enviro-weenie and animal rights-ist), but her heart is in the right place. I think if referenced and provable rebuttals to this list of lies and half-truths were made, I could at least open her eyes to the rest of the tripe she's been fed. I also think that the vast intellectual resources and memory of my fellow FReepers will help bring the truth out. I want to send her an email that starts out with: "About those DNC talking points you...

The dear bride and I have decided to take a little junket to North Idaho, a place I've been longing to visit for years. We want to fly into (insert appropriate airport), rent a car, and just head out. We want to see some spectacular mountain scenery, hopefully find some quaint places to spend the night for three or four nights. For those of you from this area, where should we fly into? And what's the best route to take on our drive, to encounter the above? Many thanks, and sorry for the vanity. MM

I posted this before, but it got routed to the religious section somehow. I was looking for the information regarding military statistics of each country that used to be listed on Infoplease Almanac's country subheading. It used to list the annual expenditure for a countries military, and the break down of army, navy air force troops. I remember it listed this information a few weeks ago when I was comparing the coalition troops % of their forces in Iraq country by country. Does anyone that uses Infoplease know what happened and if that information is still obtainable from their site, or...
