Need Freeper Help Cant Remove MS Works 2000(no disk)
Today | ME

Posted on 06/23/2004 6:14:38 PM PDT by aft_lizard

Help! I upgraded my sisters computer from 98 to XP Pro and now I cannot access any of her MS Works programs or Office programs, I click on any of them it says it cannot acces what isnt install although every where else on the computer they show up, you just cant use them. Anyways I tried uninstalling them but I cant since she doesnt have her disks anymore so I grabbed my Works Suite 2001(6.0) and tried installing that but it still requests her original disks. I have tried everything my meager tech mind knows including 3rd party software, Uninstaller Pro 6.7 and no such luck, other than that everything works great.

May be because XP has no DOS?

Or XP wants to employ its "Compatibility Wizard," and needs the original install discs?

Wild guesses.

No since it was a change of operating systems, and its apparent to me that works 2000 is incompatable without a reinstall which is impossible without the oem disks.

Can't you just go to the control panel, "add/remove programs" and uninstall it?

Doesn't MS have product support if you buy their product? Yeah, I know it's a hassle. The tech guys are in India.

whoa! I had to reinstall Works 2000 in my Windows 98 yesterday. I still don't know how it got uninstalled in the first place!

I used the word processor on Sunday and it was fine. Went to use it yesterday morning and bam! Told me to reinstall the thing.

Thank goodness I kept ALL of the software that came with my pc four yrs. ago!!

Sorry I can't loan you my software to get you out of your situation.

"XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT don't contain DOS, although XP can create DOS-bootable disks. All three OSs support the cmd.exe command shell, which lets you run NT-equivalent DOS commands. In XP, go to Start, Programs, Accessories or click Start, Run, then type

cmd.exe

to start the command shell. For older application support, you might want to try the command.com shell, which is more compatible with MS-DOS than cmd.exe is. In XP, click Start, Run, then type

command.com

to start the command.com shell. Command.com can call autoexec.bat and config.nt, both of which are located in the \windows\system32 directory, just as MS-DOS calls autoexec.bat and config.sys. If you're having trouble running your old DOS command-line programs from the cmd.exe environment, try running them inside a command.com shell."

XP does not have a DOS kernal but you can run DOS commands in an artificial DOS environment.

So I guess you're right and I'm half wrong.

I think it's worth a try contacting msn. They will probably charge you fifty bucks, but that's cheaper than buying a new pc! lol
