Tensions in Minnesota reached a boiling point Saturday as Representative Ilhan Omar faced off with agents just four days after 37-year-old mother Renee Nicole Good was shot dead by ICE during a protest. Omar, 43, was flanked by Representatives Angie Craig and Kelly Morrison outside an ICE detention facility around 9am on Saturday as they attempted to gain access for a tour, but were denied entry, according to Axios. They arrived to the Whipple Federal Building in St. Paul after Omar said she had called to tell the agency she and the two others would be arriving. They were initially...

Well, that escalated quickly. According to Tim Walz, Minnesota is at war with the federal government. He is calling out the Minnesota National Guard to protect Minnesotans against "rogue federal agents." Uh, wut? Even before the video came out that almost certainly showed that the woman who was unfortunately killed had surged her car and actually struck the federal agent who shot her, Minnesota's politicians ramped up the rhetoric, calling it murder and demanding that the federal government remove its law enforcement agents from the state. From everything I can see, Walz and Frey have been egging on the confrontations...

A RESPONSE TO THE BLOOD LIBEL OF 1860 by Abraham Lincoln: "You charge that we stir up insurrections among your slaves. We deny it; and what is your proof? Harper’s Ferry! John Brown!! John Brown was no Republican; and you have failed to implicate a single Republican in his Harper’s Ferry enterprise. If any member of our party is guilty in that matter, you know it or you do not know it. If you do know it, you are inexcusable for not designating the man and proving the fact. If you do not know it, you are inexcusable for asserting...

Gentle readers, I’ll bet you’ve never heard of the Secret Six. Neither had I until a few years ago. The Secret Six, as they came to be known, were Boston’s first limousine liberals. Most came from distinguished Boston stock and were all strong abolitionists in the period leading up to the Civil War. They gave money to the militant abolitionist John Brown, who would be considered a terrorist today, knowing he would use the donations in violent ways. When Brown failed, all but one ran like cowards away from their association with him.*** On the evening of Oct. 16, 1859,...

--snip-- It was 150 years ago today, Oct. 16, 1859. The long-haired, wild-eyed Brown was about to launch a raid that would hasten the Civil War and make him the most notorious man in America, a figure who still ignites controversy a century and a half later. Some see him as an Osama bin Laden; others, as a Christian soldier who gave his life to end human bondage. "You could ask 100 people about John Brown and still get 100 opinions," said Jeff Bowers, a ranger at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which plans three days of activities this weekend...

I found this enjoyable and wanted to share it.

A series of reenactments, dramatic productions, family activities and special tours are scheduled this year as Civil War sites in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania commemorate the 150th anniversary of abolitionist John Brown’s October 1859 raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Although the raid itself failed, it succeeded in exacerbating the divide between North and South, pushing the nation closer to civil war. “Before the raid, negotiations and a compromise between North and South might have been possible; however, after the attack—and Brown’s trial and hanging—emotions ran so high that armed conflict became inevitable,” says Tom Riford of...
