  • The Rise of Untraceable "Ghost Guns"

Axel Galvez had a deal: $7,500 for five untraceable semiautomatic rifles. And he had a buyer: a felon who planned to ship them overseas. Now, he just needed weapons that would be invisible to regulators. To avoid background checks, Mr. Galvez bought rifle parts, then assembled the five guns at the Los Angeles machine shop where he worked. He offered to build his buyer 100 more for $130,000. An underground gun-making industry that enables criminals to elude background checks and bypass gun regulations is creating a growing trade of “ghost guns,” weapons that can’t be traced by police, authorities say....

Today, I started a project I've been wanting to do for a long time. Take an original Mosin Nagant and turn it into a modern hunting rifle. I purchased two Mosins at the first of the year. One I want to keep original, one will be my conversion. The top one is the gun I will be converting. I wanted to post this here as a step-by-step process if anyone else wants to do this. So far, I've purchased an ATI stock and bipod. This morning, I began the stock replacement process. (Note, this gun has been fired and shoots...

I was wondering about gun-smithing recently. Particularly rifling; I don’t know anything about the actualities of smithing, so it’s pure conjecture on my point. Given a rifled barrel, they have constant rifling rates, is it possible to make ‘varying rate’ barrels.Would such a varying rate reduce the wear on barrels? To help clarify what I'm trying to get at, here are some pictures. A constant rifling of 2 rotations per unit-length. A variable rifling [ignore the negative portions] which starts at '0' {the rifling being parallel to the major axis of the barrel} to '8' which is the desired rate of...

More than firearms are sold at Glade's Gunsmithing including re-loading equipment, ammunition, holsters, primers and powder. Gordon said he enjoys gunsmithing because "(I'm) very much a hunting enthusiast … (I) love being in the woods and the mountains. "I was very interested in what makes a gun work … what makes it function (and why)." "It's a service to people who enjoy having their guns in working condition," ... Posted on Wed, Oct. 15, 2003 "Gentleman of gun world' builds reputation on passion, skill BY SAM COOK Knight Ridder Newspapers SOLON SPRINGS, Wis. - (KRT) - Eric Meitzner turns the small pistol in his hands, examining it silently. Jim Beaulier has driven an hour from Duluth to Meitzner's gunsmithing shop near Solon Springs with the handgun. It's an old German gun, and Beaulier would like to clean it but can't figure out how to take it apart. He has come to the right man. Meitzner, 51, has earned a reputation as an excellent gunsmith, and he draws customers from...
