Army Special Forces candidates will train in a "realistic" guerrilla war to be fought in rural North Carolina and South Carolina counties later this month, according to the service. Known as the Robin Sage training exercise, the two-week "unconventional warfare" drill is the final test of candidates' Special Forces Qualification Course training. The drill will take place Jan. 22 to Feb. 4 on privately owned land across 25 counties in North Carolina and three counties in South Carolina, the U.S. Army's John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School said in a news release. The Army did not provide the...

Did you catch Eric Burdon on the PBS special "My Generation: The 60's Experience" recently? Eric was "100 pounds of hipness in a ten-pound bag," as Dave Barry used to say. His Che Guevara shirt shamed both Carlos Santana's and Johnny Depp's. This was no measly t-shirt, either; it was a collared shirt, very elegant, with a HUGE image of the gallant Che's face on both front and back. My family rushed into the den when I exploded – not in rage – but in mirth. "WE GOTTA GET OUTTA THIS PLACE!" Eric was singing. "EXACTLY, Eric!" I roared "You...

WASHINGTON -- The guerrilla war in Iraq has moved steadily beyond the so-called Sunni Triangle and into areas of the country once considered peaceful, a potentially ominous development for security forces trying to restore order in the country.

Since the end of major combat operations on May 1, nearly 40 percent of attacks on US and coalition targets have been outside the Sunni Triangle, home to many remnants of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's regime, according to internal Defense Department reports obtained by the Globe. The monthly breakdown is classified, but Defense Department officials confirmed that the number of attacks occurring in the far north, south, and far western Iraq -- areas outside the Sunni Triangle, which is immediately north and west of the capital of Baghdad -- has increased in recent months. This week alone, two US soldiers were shot, dragged, and hit with rocks in the northern city of Mosul and another was killed there yesterday in a rocket attack, adding to growing violence in what had been considered a relatively stable city.

June 30 — By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Monday remnants of toppled President Saddam Hussein's government have coalesced into a "terrorist network" in Iraq, but rejected the notion that U.S. and British forces are facing a guerrilla war or are stuck in a quagmire. During a Pentagon briefing, Rumsfeld compared the postwar situation in Iraq to the difficult path taken by the United States after declaring its independence from Britain and before establishing a new Constitution and electing a president. Rumsfeld also accused some members of the news media, who he did not...

Guerrilla War in Iraq Jun 18, 2003 Summary The United States is now clearly involved in a guerrilla war in the Sunni regions of Iraq. As a result, U.S. forces are engaging in counterinsurgency operations, which historically have proven most difficult and trying -- for both American forces and American politics. Suppressing a guerrilla operation without alienating the indigenous population represents an extreme challenge to the United States that at this point does not appear avoidable -- and the seriousness of which does not appear to be broadly understood. Analysis The United States currently is involved in an extended, low-intensity...

BOGOTA - The week Colombian President Alvaro Uribe took office started out badly.

Just after dawn Aug. 5, fierce combat between rebels and paramilitaries battling over fertile cocaine territory in Córdoba killed so many peasants and rebels that authorities never quite figured out how many died. Maybe 15, the military said. Perhaps 27, or even 60.
