Guerrilla War In Iraq Spreading [So Is Media Dis-information]

WASHINGTON -- The guerrilla war in Iraq has moved steadily beyond the so-called Sunni Triangle and into areas of the country once considered peaceful, a potentially ominous development for security forces trying to restore order in the country.

Since the end of major combat operations on May 1, nearly 40 percent of attacks on US and coalition targets have been outside the Sunni Triangle, home to many remnants of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's regime, according to internal Defense Department reports obtained by the Globe. The monthly breakdown is classified, but Defense Department officials confirmed that the number of attacks occurring in the far north, south, and far western Iraq -- areas outside the Sunni Triangle, which is immediately north and west of the capital of Baghdad -- has increased in recent months. This week alone, two US soldiers were shot, dragged, and hit with rocks in the northern city of Mosul and another was killed there yesterday in a rocket attack, adding to growing violence in what had been considered a relatively stable city.

The attacks have shifted mainly to in and around Mozul. Notice how Fallujah and Tikrit have been relatively quiet lately. I suspect this is because the U.S. efforts are working in these areas and the people who weren't captured or killed by our troops realized that they had to move to a different location if they wanted to continue the fight. I also suspect that our military gave the word to the local leaders in Fallujah and Tikrit that if the attacks continued there, homes other than the one owned by Al Douri were going to start getting destroyed. This may have persuaded the local leaders in these areas to tell the thugs who are doing the fighting to move on or risk being ratted out to the Americans.

...a potentially ominous development...

I guess the "Q" word was getting a bit overused.

Sure it's spreading it's working! One bomb and the UN pulls out, one bomb and the Red Cross leaves, threaten a bomb and the Japanese pull out. So far only the US, the Brits and the Italians have the intestinal fortitude to stick it out.

However, every new US casualty and the US media makes it into a failure of US policy and the Democrat dwarves running for president become more shrill in their call for withdrawl. If I were a Baathist seeking to re-establish my power I'd be doing the same thing.

The Boston Globe journalist, writing in July 2002 on Pentagon trepidation and Iraq WMD, has a very interesting quotes from General Wesley Clark, and former CIA chief Stansfield Turner. See:

My brother has been in Mosul since September 30th and it seems as though the attacks have increased there since then. I guess they know he's there and would like to take them all out. He wants to strap deer antlers on them and run them up and down the street.

I believe I paraphrase Sun Tsu: When strong appear weak, when weak, appear strong.

It sure is nice of our liberal media to make sure these poor, deprived, terrorist-types have a cheerleading section.

Jeeez, I'm having flashbacks to the crap the media pulled during Vietnam. Next thing, they'll have some Hollywood tart sitting at a missile launcher or such.....

What you have described is typical of guerrilla wars i.e. hit the target of opportunity, then retreat, then hit the enemy in other location, in other words always keep the enemy off balance and wear him down. This is why the effort ot police and occupy Iraq over the long haul is like nailing jelly to the wall.

I don't see justification for you altering the title. You may differ in your opinion, but there's not disinformation in the article. It's a pretty straight forward assessment of the situation.
