Anger, denial, bargaining, depression, acceptance ... eye-clawing? Has Elisabeth Kübler-Ross amended her 1969 work on the five stages of grief? Or are Democrats just stuck in the first stage? It didn't take 24 hours from the call of Pennsylvania for Donald Trump before Democrats began running to their favorite media outlets to vent their rage at the result. Axios' Andrew Solender offered up an overview headlined, "Democrats start clawing each others' eyes out," figuratively speaking. Or at least we hope it's figuratively speaking: The dust has not yet settled from the 2024 election, but the Democratic Party's blame game over...

The first time I saw my father cry was in 1963. I was nine years old. We had gotten word the day before that my mother’s oldest sister had been murdered while working in her husband’s law office. A stranger came in off the street and killed her in a deeply brutal manner. It became news across the state for nearly a year. I remember stepping into my parent’s bedroom. My father was lying on the bed, face down, and sobbing into his pillow like a child. I stepped back in awe. The funeral was beyond somber. On the day...

“We Grieve, and We Have Hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) In the Epistle reading we heard a few minutes ago, Paul says he writes to the Thessalonians “that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.” Did you catch that? “That you may not grieve”? Does that mean that Christians are not supposed to grieve? That if you grieve, it must mean that your faith is lacking, because of course we Christians should be above grieving? Does it mean that? No, by no means! It’s not saying that Christians cannot grieve. No, we’re human, we have emotions, we...

Stages of griefDenial and isolation - This first stage may start before the loss occurs if the death of the loved one is expected. Or it may begin immediately at the time or shortly after the loss. It can last anywhere from a few hours to days or weeks. The feelings experienced in the first stage of grief may be fear, shock, or numbness. The person may be have pangs of distress, often triggered by reminders of the deceased. During this time, the bereaved person may feel emotionally “shut off” from the world. The grieving person may avoid others or...

There is still a stigma in our culture about pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and stillbirth. Here are three reasons not to keep it a secret.Meghan, the duchess of Sussex, revealed last week in a New York Times opinion article that she suffered a miscarriage last summer. Recently, supermodel Chrissy Teigen was also open about her grief over her pregnancy loss. While there is still a tendency in our culture to conceal pregnancy losses, I applaud the willingness of these well-known women to share their stories, and hope that their examples will help mothers and families in the same situation to be...

Climate change is often framed as a scientific or technical issue. But for many, it’s an emotional one too. **SNIP** Andrew Bryant, a therapist based in Seattle, maintains the website climateandmind.org, which provides advice on finding a clinician. It also contains detailed descriptions of scholars’ growing understanding of ecological grief, and references for books and articles about climate and mental health. Ultimately, people need to create habits that allow them to recognize and process their grief, but not be suffocated by it, said Atkinson. That could mean getting outside, making art or reading literature. Atkinson teaches a class on environmental...

Christmas is a glorious time of year for most families. It is a time of visits and reconnecting with relatives from afar. We all take time to rest, to relax in the joy of the season and the comforts of home. Seeking refuge from the winter chill, we converge around our collective hearth and enjoy the warmth of the yule log, the scents of festive candles, a mug of hot chocolate and the familiar songs and traditions we hold so dear. But sometimes, those who've recently lost a loved one find themselves out in the cold. And they are often...

Every year, nearly 45,000 people in America kill themselves. That is more than twice the number that die in homicides, and the numbers are increasing. There is one group in particular causing this spike - white, middle aged men. India Rakusen goes to Montana, where suicide rates are double the national average, to find out what drives so many of these men to despair and taking their own lives. "Every year, nearly 45,000 people in America die by suicide. That's over double the number of homicides. In the last 20 years, suicide rates in most western countries have fallen, but...

A Grief Observed Msgr. Charles Pope • August 16, 2018 • I like many of you am grieving these days. I will not speak directly to it here, but I think you know why I am grieving.I don’t do grief well. But I have learned to study it in others and thus find my way.My father died more than 10 years ago, and except for essential papers related to his estate, I simply boxed up most of his papers and stored them in the attic of my rectory for future attention. At long last I am sorting through those...

So my brother passed away at 59 after an 8 year battle with ALS. I hadn't seen him in over 2 years primarily based upon my beliefs and their opposition to those beliefs. I really didn't want my children around to be honest. That said he was still my brother and the friction wasn't with him at all. It was his kid and wife. I had commented about my beliefs on gay marriage and they were strongly opposed to my opposition. His whole family were strong Hillary supporters as well. In fact they moved to Atlanta from the land of...
