A New Hampshire town manager - whose gay son died aged 35 - has resigned over 'painful' homophobic comments made by a state senator. Jim Gleason was the town manager of Littleton, New Hampshire, until he handed in his resignation on Monday citing a 'toxic work environment'. His resignation followed months of tension in Littleton after a row broke out over three LGBTQ murals in public areas of the town. State Senator Carrie Gendreau, who sits on the Littleton Select Board, spoke out against the pro-LGBTQ paintings back in August saying they were 'demonic' and adding: 'I don't want that...

President Donald Trump exceeded his authority when he reversed bans on offshore drilling in vast parts of the Arctic Ocean and dozens of canyons in the Atlantic Ocean, a U.S. judge said in a ruling that restored the Obama-era restrictions. U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason in a decision late Friday threw out Trump’s executive order that overturned the bans that comprised a key part of Obama’s environmental legacy. Presidents have the power under a federal law to remove certain lands from development but cannot revoke those removals, Gleason said. “The wording of President Obama’s 2015 and 2016 withdrawals indicates...

Born 100 years ago (today), Jackie Gleason rose to the top of comedy thanks to his larger than life personality and rigorous work ethic. The mood of the photo essay is a strange one: Jackie Gleason’s soon-to-be hit show The Honeymooners was about to hit the airwaves, but the star’s look in the pages of that 1955 issue of LIFE was melancholy. The entertainer, as the magazine explained, had “just become, by financial standards at least, history’s greatest comedian.†He was raking in millions between his weekly Jackie Gleason Show and new contracts with Buick and CBS for The Honeymooners....

I loved watching re-runs of The Honeymooners when I was a kid. I appreciated the fact that they were more broke than my family and, like my parents, they met that circumstance with good humor. In the classic episode above Ralph sold his prized bowling ball to buy a Christmas present wife for his beloved wife Alice. Â The late comedian Jackie Gleason when asked his religion would always say "Bad Catholic". He was once asked by a Paulist priest to appear on his television program and talk about religion which he did, stating to the priest that Catholicism...

— Political ads, mailers, volunteers knocking on every door and daily news coverage. If you couldn’t tell, the presidential election is only a few months away and every candidate is jockeying for your vote. But, how would you feel if your vote didn’t even count? Philadelphia officials have released a report detailing that somewhere between 200 and 1,000 voting irregularities were uncovered in fewer than 1 percent of Philadelphia’s voting precincts during the 2012 primary. These voting “irregularities” included noncitizens voting, nonregistered citizens voting, machines registering more votes for a candidate than registered voters at that polling place, and even...

HARRISBURG — The plan to change how Pennsylvania awards its electoral votes in presidential elections has ignited a debate over its fairness and the effect on the state's substantial clout in national politics. Both the state Republican Party chairman and the national GOP political committee, which has the mission of electing Republicans to Congress, oppose the proposal by Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware County. Pileggi wants to replace the system of awarding all of the state's electoral votes to the candidate who wins the statewide election. The number of Pennsylvania electoral votes will shrink from 21 to 20 in...

Crash Course: Pennsylvania Political Corruption 101; The Legacy of Murtha & Gleason In Major League Baseball, sometimes the after game fireworks are of more interest than the game itself, and sometimes the behind the scenes conduct of one of its players far over shadows whatever victories that player may have brought to his team. In baseball, this was the truth that confronted Pete Rose. In Pennsylvania politics, it is my intention for this truth to confront Republican State Committee Chairman, Robert Gleason – especially now that he wants to Chairman of the Republican National Committee.  The front page of the November...

Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Rob Gleason is reaching out to members of the Republican National Committee and top GOP operatives in advance of a possible bid for national party chairman, a source close to Gleason told POLITICO. Gleason has talked to a handful of RNC insiders — including former New Jersey committeeman David Norcross — about a potential run, and is touting last Tuesday’s huge Republican gains in Pennsylvania as a chief selling point. “We had more Democratic takeaways than any other state in the country,” said the Gleason confidant. “Gleason’s proved his worth at taking a blue state and...

Roy Gleason, the Dodger who batted 1.000 before being drafted and going off to Vietnam, is back in the fold It has been 40 years, but he still remembers the pitch. The second pitch. The final pitch. It was late September 1963. It was a low inside fastball. He lined it down the left-field line. He sprinted to second base. The crowd roared. Inside a crisp new Dodger uniform, Roy Gleason's heart leaped. He was 20, and after his first major league plate appearance, he was batting 1.000. "I thought I was going to be a superstar," he remembered, and...

Pennsylvania Republican Committee Chairman Robert Gleason Jr. said in an interview today that the state party may not support Sen. Arlen Specter in the Republican primary next year -- a day after his national counterpart suggested that GOP supporters of the economic stimulus bill could take a hit in upcoming elections. "Of course, anything is a possibility," Gleason told The Morning Call. "It is up to the committeemen and committeewomen [next February]. … But the headline should not read that the state party is not going to endorse him. He certainly could be endorsed." Gleason said that -- right now...

Virtual Campaign Manager: You are GOP Chairman Rob Gleason. You have just heaped praise on Democratic Congressman Jack Murtha, at the expense of his opponent Diane Irey. Should you step down as chairman? Gleason: "I cannot deny that Murtha has done a wonderful job for our region. He’s brought home the bacon. If that’s how you want to judge a congressman or any elected official, he gets five stars."
