Vermont has become the first state in the nation to mandate access to free condoms in public high schools and middle schools. Gov. Phil Scott signed the bill into law last year and the condoms are available now. It applies to grades 7-12.

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. Sex education starts early, especially if you go to elementary school in Provincetown, Mass. That’s because the school committee has unanimously adopted a condom distribution policy beginning as early as first grade. According to the Provincetown Banner, the program requires that students speak to a school nurse or trained counselor before receiving condoms.
