What's the connection between Puccini, Neville Chamberlain and David Bowie? Answer: The biggest hit of a prodigious talent who died a few days ago at the age of 89. Fats Domino sold over 65 million records, which is more than any other Fifties rocker save a certain E. Presley. But he was such a modest and self-effacing man (and not just by comparison with relentless self-promoters such as Chuck Berry and Little Richard) that the part he played in a particularly turbulent period of American popular music was often relegated to an afterthought. He last swam, almost literally, into public...

Vladimir Putin has quite a musical side. The Russian prime minister may have a tough stance on foreign policy, but he also has quite a docile side when it comes to the arts. Putin gave his best rendition of Fats Domino’s classic “Blueberry Hill” for a larger audience at a charity event for cancer in St. Petersburg recently and the A-list crowd could not get enough! The full house was packed with famous faces including Kevin Costner, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Gérard Depardieu and Sharon Stone. OK! In 40-some years of sitting in Baptist services, including the height of the anything-with-a-beat-is-of-the-devil era, I have actually heard preachers refer to the Fats Domino classic, Blueberry Hill. They expounded, mostly, on the innuendo of what “found my thrill” really meant… However, not one, not one of them– even those who claimed the Beatles couldn’t sing, it was just primal screaming– referred to Blueberry Hill as “hard rock.” Leave that to Keith Olbermann. Oh, and by the way, nobody has used the term “hard rock” in about a decade…Fittingly, this bit of musical critique came in Olbermann’s “Oddball” segment, in...

NEW ORLEANS — Visiting his home for the first time since he was rescued from rising floodwaters in a boat, Fats Domino found his piano overturned among mud and debris and his house in ruins. Despite the destruction, the 77-year-old legendary musician found a few bright spots during last week's tour, arranged by WWL-TV: a favorite shirt that survived unblemished and a bust that made it through the storm unbroken. Those were the exceptions. His electric keyboard sat against a wall covered in dried mud, mildew and mold, and his white grand piano was overturned, broken and stained with the...

It is believed missing blues legend Fats Domino survived Hurricane Katrina, after his daughter Karen Domino recognised him in a photograph of rescued survivors. The image showed Domino, 77, dressed in jeans and a blue striped shirt being brought to safety by boat - but his whereabouts remain unknown. Karen Domino says: "We're very relieved. I didn't have any information. I was just praying." The star's long-time agent Al Embry raised the alarm after he failed to contact the musician following a phone call on Sunday.
