I'm new to the Free republic forums and I need to ask a silly question. 1. What does PING, BUMP, IMHO, and BTTT stand for?? 2. PING list, adding ppl or getting added to one? I've been seeing these and I have no idea what they are. I'm usually pretty good at figuring these things out but these are escaping me for some reason. Thanks for replying in advance to the new Freeper.

Is there someplace one joins up or do you just show up?

It seems on major events, Free Republic crashed or takes forever to load etc...what can we do to ensure it runs smoothly on November 2nd and will there be mirror sites?

Can anyone else do a search on FR? It tells me I don't have permission. Sorry if this has been posted already, I have no way of knowing if it has. :)

Any ideas how many freepers?

It's always something new with a complex system. We have frontends, backends and databases, not to mention ancillary services like DNS, mail, and internal gadgets. Something is bound to goober up. A few months ago we were hitting the limits of our database environment. I added hardware and all was good... well, too good. The backends couldn't keep up, so I added hardware (just this weekend!), and all was good... until tonight, when things were once again too good. This time the frontend went on strike, overwhelmed. It is taking what seems like forever to load pages tonight. I don't know if it's the new upgrades which were done over the weekend, high traffic overloading the servers, or the DNC trying to hack in. I don't mean to complain, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

When FR breaks, it's serious news, so even though I didn't post to "breaking" news, I thought this information belonged on the main forum. Jim said that he anticipates that FR will be offline again tonight for up to 8 hours. Some of you are aware that there is a Radio FR chat room, hosted by Agitator. You can come in and log in with your own screen names, or whatever you want. I don't know how many the room will accommodate. I've seen it pretty full at election time.
