To join Mafia is to put your life on the line . In a Mafia family there are a number of positions that are needed to be fulled to have a sucessful mafia. The Associates are people who are not made members, but who help the Mafia in different actives. Soldiers are made members who do most of the dirty work . The crew is a group of soldiers under the control of a capo. The head member of the crew is called the capo. He is the one who assigns the jobs for the soldiers to do

Then the capo reports back to the boss. The head of the family who controls the Mafia members and money. He is the brains behind the whole Mafia empire. When you speak of all these thing you can only be talking about one thing the boss of the Mafia. Also the family is all the members together. As the advisor, he is an older Mafia member who has stopped running the streets, but knows everything about it.

When it comes to joining the Mafia you have to value of “Omerta’. The word is the mob law of “silence”. For example, in 1929 Lucky Lucaino, Mafia boss, was kidnapped, beaten, and stabbed with an icepick. He survived, but kept his vow of “Omerta”. This is the most feared rule. And the reason for that is, if this value is breaking the you are killed. The other codes of the Mafia are very plain and clear. One has to put the organization above his wife, children, country, and religion .You are not to provide any information or help to a law enforcement agency . Respect all members despite personal feelings and to pay assessments imposed upon him by his captain, regardless of purpose. Just like the value of “Omerta”, if you break these rules you die. These rules were first divulged by Joseph Valachi in 1963.

The next step in joining the Mafia is being intiatied. It is many different ways to be initiated into the Mafia. Regardless of how many ways of initiation they all mean the same. We ( the mafia) are family, we live by the gun and knife, and die by the gun and knife. In being initiated into the Mafia you have your finger pricked. Then the boss squeezes the blood onto the table and tells the future member to repeat after him. “I live by gun and the knife, and die by the gun and the knife. All this is done from the Mafia belief that justice, honor, and vengeance are for a man to take care of.

The American Mafia has a large number of activities they perform to make money to profit their organization. Every activity is very illegal and can have you put in jail. Prostitution, extortion, murder, and kidnapping are some of the things the American Mafia do to make money. Other activities include gambling, loan sharking, money-laundering, and selling drugs. All of these activities are known for making a great amount of money. The best example of how much money you can make in illegal Mafia business is Lucky Luniano. Charles “Lucky” Luciano, the boss of all bosses, who made annual profits of 70 million dollars world-wide just off his prostitution business which was formed in Manhattan in 1925. Thousand and thousands of mobsters profit from these illegal activities. For these type of actions, he was sentenced to thirty to fifty years.

The one who profits the most is the head in charge, the boss. Not only are they the most powerful, they are also the highest paid. John Gotti, Mafia boss of the Gambiano Family, has the richest and the most powerful company in the Mafia. Last year the Gambiano Family’s annual profit was $700 million, the highest of the Mafia families. Other Mafia families make close to that much , but none comes close to their figures. “So fresh and so clean.” is all you can say when you see John Gotti in his 2,500 dollar outfit. Wearing his custom-made double-breasted suit, hand painted silk ties, and matching pocket squares. The Mafia spends lots of money on their personal wardrobe. Most bosses who grow out of their suits hand them down to the other members. Imagine being handed down a 2,000 dollar suit that is brand new, only been wore once of twice at the most.

Big houses, expenses cars, and fine jewelry are also another lifestyle of the mobsters in the Mafia world.

The vastness of the American Mafia enlarges every day. The FBI intelligence base has identified over 2,000 members in the Mafia. They have also identified 25 Mafia families across the United States. The cities where the twenty five Mafia families live in is Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Milwaukee, and New York. All of these five cities have nine families in them, with New York having the most. New England, Newark,Cleveland, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Los Angles Denver, Buffalo, and Pittston are also cities where Mafia families exist. Rochester, St. Louis, San Jose, Tampa, Tucson, and San Fransico round out the list of where the Mafia families live.

With the families in New York leading the way in number of families and members it is a powerful Mafia city. Most Mafia families have less than than 10 members. The two families in New York with the most members are Genovese and Gambino. Both families bosses are now serving time in prison. The Genovese family has 300 to 400 hundred members and their boss is Vincent Gigante who is currently in jail for murder. The biggest, most powerful, richest, and most famous family in the Mafia business is the Gambino family with 500 plus members strong. John Gotti, muti-billion Mafia boss, is the head of the Gambino enterprise.

Throughout history the Mafia has existed in many different forms, but none had the effect like the American Mafia. It iw a wide spread problem in the United States. It has continued to grow and kill societies in America since the late 1800’s. No real solution has been made on how to completly stop this problem. From the way things have been looking, it seems that the American Mafia is invincible.
