Chuck Schumer’s bad shutdown bet
Washington Examiner ^ | September 30, 2025 2:00 pm | David Harsanyi

Government shutdowns are Kabuki theater. And the next showing is scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 12:01 am.

Conventional D.C. wisdom maintains that the side pushing for passing a clean continuing resolution as a stopgap to fund the government is typically the party that can make a more coherent winning argument.

DEMOCRATS STILL CLUELESS ON BORDER SECURITY

Well, the Republican-led House already passed a “clean” continuing resolution, maintaining government funding until November. Yet Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) now demand Republicans preemptively extend sunsetting COVID-era Obamacare subsidies.

To put the situation in context, imagine Democrats extending expiring GOP tax cuts in a continuing resolution. Or, better yet, imagine them acquiescing to Republican demands to cut Obamacare subsidies. There is simply no alternative universe in which any of that happens. We all know it.

One can certainly appreciate Schumer being tempted by a shutdown. It allows him to show a little “fight.” Polls continue to find Republicans leading on every issue that matters to voters, including the economy, immigration, and crime. Democrats still want to make the fight about President Donald Trump, who, at a 46% job approval rating on the RealClearPolitics average, is faring slightly better than the recent historical average for second-term presidencies.

At this point, if Democrats agree to a deal without any concessions from Republicans — or at least, the government partially closing for a few days — they risk looking weak and feckless to the activists. But empty gestures aren’t always harmless. One of the self-destructive habits of the pre-Trump GOP was overpromising the base, creating the impression it...

Shutdown allows Schumer......to show a little “fight.”

Schumer supported the last CR in Feb-March, and received HOLY HELL from Ocrazio-Cortex and her ilk.

Besides the usual creepy reasons Schumer is putting up a "fight" is that he knows Ocrazio-Cortex is come after his Senate seat.

The Democrat Party literally worships big government, it’s their religion. Let them shut it down.

This time, a lot of good might result from a shutdown, if 100,000 federal workers quit as has been rumored.

By this time next summer, most voters will have no memory of the federal government taking a short, partial break.

Not true. There will continue to be an endless parade of CRs until regular order is restored.

The Democrats don't wan regular order because they can time the CRs so that there will be another round of government shutdowns closer to the mid-term elections.

while there are a few vital federal govt functions that must not be allowed to strike or shut down (air traffic control, defense, ...), President Reagan handled the air traffic strike quite effectively ... so some things can be fixed if Schummer gets his walkout

the one walkout I would LOVE to see would be that of Schummer!

Another reason to stop with the CRs and pass an actual budget. They are not subject to the 60 vote rule.

They need to get this ironed out to pass for this current fiscal year and then next year just pass the same budget again early on - no need for deadlines with it going into “crisis” “shutdown”, etc. and the need for a CR.

Trump needs to send Schumer a memo which lists the names of the 300,000 Government workers that will be fired in the morning due to budgetary constraints.

Or Trump fires the lot of them because the budget “can’t” pay them.

I’d rather it be a surprise.

I want the Schumer Shutdown.
I want the massive Reduction In Force.

I would not be trying very hard to get Schumer to see reason right now.

Hard to believe so many of us survived Government shutdowns in the past. If i recall correctly from the last shutdown, MILLIONS died, weather was no longer under control by the U.N., Canada invaded New Hampshire, and all cable tv channels only broadcast reruns of the Oprah show. I hope the strong and wise leadership of AOC and Jazzy Jasmine Crockett will save us all.

When did Schumer switch to full glasses? Will he peer down imperiously at the lowly Medieval peasants (us) out of compulsive habit?

And Hakeem is a freak who doesn’t require joke style photsoshopping.

And he can’t stop moving his eyes from side to side and doing Gavin Newsom things with his nervous hands.

Trump has a little box in his desk which has Schmucky's pea size balls encased in acrylic resin.
