Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS aka shock lung) has been recognized since the late 60s. The most common etiology, until recently, was military/civilian trauma or a major surgical procedure. COVID-19, with a high degree of contagion, is responsible for the current global manifestation. Most individuals have minimal symptoms. People with co-morbidities can proceed to the full cascade.
