Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS aka shock lung) has been recognized since the late 60s. The most common etiology, until recently, was military/civilian trauma or a major surgical procedure. COVID-19, with a high degree of contagion, is responsible for the current global manifestation. Most individuals have minimal symptoms. People with co-morbidities can proceed to the full cascade.
The public health management is control of contagion.
The individual patient management is the same as that for ARDS.
ARDS is not a disease. It is a set of symptoms and physical findings that occurs in diseases such as coronavirus 19.

ARDS does not develop out of the blue.
It’s a SECONDARY process.

I have heard/read various things about covid 20. It is a clotting disease is one of them. It a neurological disease that affects breathing is another. Kozak I don’t think doctors know what the hell it is. So your criticism is misguided. We cannot shut society down due to covid 20. Illness has always been a risk. Covid 20 is here. Cancer is here. Heart attacks are here. Falling down the stairs and breaking your skull is here. Doctors don’t know what it is or how to prevent it spreading. Doctors can’t do anything against many viruses either. The corona virus that causes the common cold which can then lead to sinus infections, bronchitis, pneumonia and death hasn’t been stopped since the beginning of history.

I have seen some idiotic physicians in my 30 plus years and most of them are in the Veteran’s Administration health system. Not even sure why they would even have the label “doctor” when the label “idiot” was more apropos. But then again people will be people and doctors are people too.

Thank you, I’ve had more than my share of Malpractice grade ones. Bad hospitals too. Can’t read a reaction list, or your health list. I patiently typed out in order of importance, included my Specialists names and phone numbers. Gone hungry because Liquid diet was to high in Salt and Sugar. A heart/diabetic can’t have.
At least 50% of COVID fatalities have pneumonia as a co-morbidity.
My own suspicion is that many cases of ARDS are caused by simple human panic, when victims experience real difficulty in breathing for the first time in their lives.
Speculation - would the number of ARDS cases drop significantly if COVID + pneumonia victims were lightly sedated?

Have you studied the CDC “Current Best Estimate” for the “Infection Fatality Ratio?”
Under age 20 - 3 deaths per 100,000.
Age 20 to 49 - 2 deaths per 10,000.
Age 50 to 69 - 5 deaths per 1,000.
Age 70+ - 5.4 deaths per 100.

Have you studied the CDC “Mean ratio of estimated infections to reported case counts?” (Same link)
The “mean ratio” is 11. The number of USA reported COVID cases as I write this is 7.3 million (Johns Hopkins).
11 X 7.3 million = 80.3 million USA cases.
The same day the 80.3 million cases estimate came out, that geriatric clown Dr. Fauci was telling Congress that only 9% of Americans had been infected, which is less than 30 million!
Let's calculate the Case Fatality Rate using the CDC’s own number.
209,000 USA COVID deaths as I write this (Johns Hopkins).
209,000 deaths divided by 80.3 million cases = 0.26%
That is roughly 2X the rate for the 2017-18 flu season.
One final note - the CDC is not counting COVID deaths the same way it counts influenza deaths.
The CDC has specifically instructed attending physicians to count all COVID + pneumonia deaths, and all COVID + ARDS deaths, as exclusively COVID deaths.

If the CDC calculated influenza deaths like that, the influenza fatality count would triple!
COVID-19 is a dangerous disease for the elderly and the infirm.
Protect the elderly and the infirm.
