Shots rang out at a rally for former President Donald Trump on Saturday, sending the Republican presidential nominee and the crowd scrambling for cover. Trump, with blood dripping down the side of his face, was whisked away by the Secret Service. Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after being whisked off the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, after the apparent assassination attempt. Trump was treated at a local medical facility and has left the Butler area, according to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

There is only one serious candidate on the presidential ballot in November. We recommend Hillary Clinton. We don't come to this decision easily. This newspaper has not recommended a Democrat for the nation's highest office since before World War II — if you're counting, that's more than 75 years and nearly 20 elections. The party's over-reliance on government and regulation to remedy the country's ills is at odds with our belief in private-sector ingenuity and innovation. Our values are more about individual liberty, free markets and a strong national defense.

The buzz in political-media circles Friday was that reporters from The Dallas Morning News and two other newspapers had been kicked off Barack Obama's campaign plane because the papers endorsed John McCain. Not exactly. Our reporter, Todd J. Gillman, was told a few days ago that there's no space for him after today. We have protested, arguing that a paper of The News' size and stature should be on-board for the final stretch of a historic campaign.

...It is mathematically impossible for Mike Huckabee, the last remaining major GOP contender, to capture the nomination. The former Arkansas governor even turned up on Saturday Night Live recently to poke fun at himself for not going away. Let's be clear: Mr. Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, remains our choice for the GOP nomination... Aside from [McCain's] long experience and personal courage, he has a solid record of fiscal responsibility and has been on the right side of campaign finance reform and environmental issues. And he was correct and principled to lead the fight for comprehensive immigration reform last summer....

One of Texas’ largest newspaper, The Dallas Morning News, has endorsed Mike Huckabee over presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain, saying that even though “it is mathematically impossible” for Huckabee to capture the nomination, he is “the GOP’s future.” The newspaper’s editors wrote in Sunday’s editions that as a result of his social and religious conservatism, the former Arkasnas governor is on “the wrong side of abortion, gay rights and other key issues” but Huckabee still is committed to helping the poor and middle class, is “good on the environment” and not bound by ideological litmus tests.

NEW YORK The Dallas Morning News said today that 111 newsroom employees have accepted buyouts. "The number of confirmed acceptances meets our strategic newsroom realignment goals, and we have a very deep and capable team of about 450 professionals to continue producing a newspaper of distinction," Jim Moroney, publisher of the paper, said in a statement. "As we empower reporters and photographers to further apply methods in new media to communicate stories, our emphasis will remain squarely on excellence in every regard." Executives had targeted 85 positions in the newsroom or 17% of staff with a voluntary buyout. The severance...

Picking the President: Bush is the best candidate 12:36 AM CDT on Sunday, October 17, 2004 Americans want and need a president with a backbone steeled by courage and a heart tendered by compassion. Dateline: Yesterday -The Dallas Morning News had a booth set-up inside my local Kroger store for the purpose of giving away free copies of the Sunday paper. I haven't subscribed to The DMN in years, but I never remmeber them being so generous at any time in the past. Is their circulation really on a downslide? I refused the copy offered to me, as did a woman before me and an elderly couple after me. I guess the word "free" just doesn't have the impact it did once. I did not offer any "editorial comment" to the young woman behind...
