AUSTIN -- Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson has toured a Dell computer factory near Austin as part of a campaign swing through Texas. Thompson sat down and spoke one-on-one with KVUE's Elise Hu. He says he wants to hear from companies like Dell to get their views on fair tax policies and global competition. Thompson downplays the idea that he's at a disadvantage in Texas because he got such a late start on his campaign. He says there's plenty of time to get his message out.

Back in September, following another profits warning, Michael Dell was asked about rumours that his chief executive, Kevin Rollins, was about to be sacked. "Feel free to speculate," he told analysts, "because everyone else will, but it's not going to happen." Just a few months, and another profits warning, later, Mr Rollins is clearing his desk. Michael Dell is back in full control of the company he founded more than 20 years ago and sounding excited. "It feels like 1984 and I'm starting over again," he said. "Only this time I have a little more capital." In monetary terms maybe,...

The growth engine that Dell once was is sputtering. The degree of its troubles was made plain—yet again—on July 21, when the company said this quarter's earnings would fall far short of analysts' forecasts. Sales won't meet expectations either. It was the fourth time Dell (DELL) said it wouldn't meet quarterly earnings or sales forecasts since the beginning of last year, and investors were incensed. Some registered dismay at the company's annual shareholder meeting in Austin the same day (see BusinessWeek.com, 7/21/06, "Dell's Dull Meeting"). Dell shares dropped nearly 10% to $19.91, the lowest level in almost five years, and...

It’s a sad state of affairs when you buy a new computer these days and it comes pre-loaded with a ton of garbage software that brings your new machine to a crawl. If anyone’s bought a Dell PC in the last few years, you probably know what I’m talking about. Just recently, I was helping a friend set up his brand new Inspiron 1300 and it took FOREVER for it to boot up. It’s a very dissatifiying experience to pull a brand new computer out of the box and be spammed with a bunch of trial software. After removing all...

San Francisco, California (AHN) - Dell Inc., posted preliminary third-quarter earnings below expectations after weak sales in U.S. and Britain. Dell also says it would take charges of about $450 million in the third quarter for costs of repairing some computer systems for customers, cutting jobs and restructuring units. The company said it expects to report revenue of $13.9 billion, below its earlier forecast of $14.1 billion to $14.5 billion and analysts' $14.3 billion estimate. U.S. consumer and British unit sales "fell short of expectations," Dell says. "They were seeing some weakness in desktop and strength in notebooks, but...

Benjamin Curtis, the 22-year old actor who portrays the Dell Guy in those bothersome computer commercials, was arrested late last night (2/9) on a marijuana possession charge, The Smoking Gun has learned.
