Georgia United Credit Union recently updated their User Agreement — you know, that wall of text that your financial institution flashes at you from time to time and which few people bother to read. The catch: If you rely on Georgia United Credit Union for your purchasing tool, like, say, a debit card, you may no longer use that to purchase firearms, ammunition, firearms parts, or accessories, along with a host of other items.

The 102-year-old Infinity Credit Union will stop handling coins at its five Maine locations on Sept. 1 as part of its merger with Deere Employees Credit Union in Illinois, becoming the first financial institution in the state to do so. The coins curtailment by Maine’s oldest credit union does not appear related to the shortage of them during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when business and bank closures slowed circulation. Deere said the change is to keep all of its credit unions, including the Infinity ones in Maine, under the same system focused on digital transactions. Infinity is the...

University Credit Union immediately assumed CBS Employees’ assets.

Recently, I was elected treasurer of my local SAR chapter, the older male equivalent of the far better known Daughters of the American Revolution. Thus, I was appalled to learn what a partly rate of interest our existing bank paid on a recently matured CD (0.06%!) and refused to renew it, asking them to deposit it into our checking account instead.Accordingly, I am now actually shopping for another bank our credit union willing to offer a fine, patriotic organization such as our better rates and service. My retirement money, for example, is with Charles Schwab, where I can earn 2.3% (annualized)...

Colorado plan to set up the world’s first financial system for marijuana survived less than 24 hours before state lawmakers changed course Thursday night and shelved the idea. The proposal would have allowed state-licensed marijuana businesses to create a financial co-op, sort of an uninsured credit union. The measure was introduced late Wednesday and cleared a House committee on Thursday. But a few hours later, another House committee gutted the plan by amending the bill to say that Colorado will continue studying the problem of marijuana businesses having a hard time accessing banking services. …

Credit unions continue to prove that they offer consumers advantages over banks. According to the latest Bankrate survey, the average monthly fee on noninterest checking accounts offered by a bank rose a record 25 percent. By contrast, credit unions continue to hold the line on checking account fees. “It’s clear that people today are gravitating toward true value when they’re looking for a financial institution. Credit unions offer that true value,” said Fred Becker, president and CEO of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). Here are some of the benefits of credit unions: 1. People before profits –...

Occupy movement wants to start a financial institutionBy: Dan Schreiber | 11/23/11 2:38 PM Examiner Staff Writer Call it the First Bank of Occupy. The denizens of the embattled tent city on San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza have been pushing for folks to close their accounts at big banks and put the money in credit unions instead. Now, the movement wants to form its own institution to keep their money out of the hands of the reviled 1 percent. A survey circulating Facebook and other social networking sites asks some simple questions that occupiers hope will relay the demand for...

SCAM ALERT A recent telephone scam asking for account information has been targeting some area residents. The automated message informs consumers that their account/ATM/Debit card is about to be cancelled, or has been compromised, and it is necessary to reactivate the account/card with "bank security". The message includes the name of a local financial institution and instructs the recipient to "dial/press 1" to reactivate and then requests that the account/card number and personal identification number (PIN) be entered. As a reminder, the credit union would not request your account information via a phone call or email message. Never provide your...

PALM BAY, Fla. -- A local bank customer was hailed as a hero Thursday night for taking down a man who said he was down on his luck and he decided to commit a robbery. Floyd Francis gave up instantly, police said, and he was taken to the Brevard County Jail. "I drew my gun on him and put him down," Ruben Torres said. In a hand-written confession, Francis said he tried to rob the Space Coast Credit Union in Palm Bay because he needed money. He wrote, "I make music for a living, but tings not working out right...

I went to my Credit Union Today in Michigan. Big sign in the lobby by the greeter, Check our out new low Mortgage Rates! So I inquired asking the young lady for the sheet. To my surprise no 30 year fixed offered. I asked are you afraid of Inflation coming back and getting whipsawed by holding long paper with rates lower than inflation? She looked at me like I was from Mars, since she was way to young to remember Jimma Carter. She mentioned that the Mortgages types (they had a big seminar) noted that they decided not to offer...

MIRAMAR (CBS4) ― One of the oldest and largest credit unions in South Florida has fallen victim of the dismal economy. Eastern Financial Federal Credit Union, founded 72 years ago to provide financial services to employees of now-defunct Eastern Airlines, was placed under federal conservatorship late Friday afternoon. ... This means the NCUA has taken control of the credit union, according to Swann. Officials from Space Coast Credit Union of Melbourne were appointed to temporarily manage day-to-day operations.

BY MARK MAREMONT In the latest effort to prop up a sector of the finance industry, federal regulators on Wednesday guaranteed $80 billion in uninsured deposits at the powerful institutions that service the nation's credit unions -- a maneuver that shows how the economic crisis continues to ripple across the U.S. Regulators also injected $1 billion of new capital into the largest of these wholesale credit unions, U.S. Central Federal Credit Union of Lenexa, Kan., after the firm on Wednesday posted an unexpected $1.1 billion loss for 2008. U.S. Central serves essentially as a main clearinghouse for the others in...

Phishers recently cast yet another net. This time the con artists hoped to bait people who hold accounts with Lockheed Federal Credit Union. As with all phishing scams, the culprits send out spoof e-mails to the masses - whether or not they were LFCU account holders. The intent: To trick at least some e-mail recipients into revealing their personal information - checking or savings account numbers, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers and other data that could be used to steal money from the unsuspecting victims. That's the bad news. The good news: Through quick action on Friday afternoon representatives...

Greater Nevada Credit Union today made it clear that the liberals are making an effort to gain "PC" control of some Nevada financial institutions. I have been a member for several years, and have carried concealed, and occasionally openly, all that time. Of late I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of "Undesirable" type "persons" (to use the most polite phrase possible) frequenting our small town, too many of whom seem to have nothing to do all day but hang around shopping centers and financial institutions. Burglary, Robbery, Vandalism, and bust for hard drugs are all on the...

Until last November, Krista Donahue considered herself a huge fan of credit unions. In 1998, working as a field director for Hill & Knowlton, she helped marshal support for legislation that expanded membership access to credit unions. After the bill became law, she was one of the first lobbyists to open an account with the Wright Patman Congressional Federal Credit Union, the 50-year-old financial institution serving House Members and staff. But since Donahue attempted to sell her car over the Internet last fall, a series of mysterious e-mails and phone calls from Nigeria, a craftily forged cashier’s check and a...
