During an interview with Bloomberg TV on Monday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas responded to a question on how to handle people who are in the country illegally by stating that there are “12 million people who are here in the United States who have been contributing so fundamentally to our country’s well-being.” Host Romaine Bostick said that the consequences for arriving at the border irregularly won’t be a deterrent for a lot of people and don’t “address the other sort of elephant in the room, which is dealing with the undocumented immigrants who are already here in the nation. And...

As the city of San Francisco debates how to pay for a legacy of racism, its slavery disclosure ordinance asking businesses that contract with the city for voluntary donations to "ameliorate the effects of slavery" has not received a donation in seven years. San Francisco's Human Rights Commission released a memo in December 2022 that advocated the city give $5 million to each eligible Black resident. The U.S. Census estimated about 42,390 Black residents in the city in 2021. The commission didn't say how many people would be eligible for the $5 million. In 2006, San Francisco created a "slavery...

Bud Grant, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowl appearances, has died at the age of 95, the Vikings announced Saturday. In Grant's 28 seasons as a head coach in Canada and with the Vikings, his teams reached the playoffs 20 times, played in 10 championship games and won four titles. However, none of those titles came in the NFL, as he became the first coach to lose four Super Bowls. Grant was the first person to be inducted into both the CFL Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame....

One last Vanity post to say Thank You to FreeRepublic.com as well as the regulars who come to this site and keep it alive all year 'round. First of all, I did donate to the site a few days ago because I am NOT a regular, but I certainly have spent a lot of time here lately. I encourage all people like me, who may not be a regulars but who have been here somewhat religiously lately, to leave some gratitude behind in the form of a cash donation. It is easy to do. I also say thank you to...

I dropped my newspaper subscription awhile back. No need for it. I get all the info. I need from the internet. And certainly the best source for political news is Free Republic. All the other stuff here (gardening, etc.) is just a nice bonus. So it occurred to me. It only seems fair to send that old yearly newspaper subscription money to FR instead. I'll be taking care of that this week.

Former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska has signed on as a contributor to the Fox News Channel. The network confirmed that Ms. Palin will appear on the network’s programming on a regular basis as part of a multi-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. Ms. Palin will not have her own regular program, one person familiar with the deal said, though she will host an occasional series that will run on the network from time to time. This person would not elaborate, but the network does have a precedent for such a series. Oliver L. North is the host of...

The Silver Bullet - ‘Can’t Vote Can’t Contribute’ Money has corrupted our political system to the extent that it no linger represents the people but represents the special interests that fund politicians. One solution to the problem is ‘Can’t Vote Can’t Contribute’. Simply stated ‘Can’t Vote Can’t Contribute’ means no one can contribute one dime to any politician, political entity or activity who they cannot vote for. There would be no limit on contributions and they must be placed in the public record as soon as they are accepted. Violations of ‘Can’t Vote Can’t Contribute’ would be treated as a...

Petition challenges shrink field in race for Emanuel's seat by Alex Keefe Feb 05, 2009 Two candidates hung on to their spots on the 5th Congressional District primary ballot on Thursday, but one was bumped off when Cook County election officials issued rulings on several ballot petition challenges in the race to fill Rahm Emanuel’s vacant seat. A county election board found that Democrat Roger Thompson III has only 494 valid petition signatures—far short of the 927 he needed to run in the March 3 primary. “It’s not easy for anybody to break into politics,” said Thompson, who struggled through...

Hi, sorry for the dumb question. This will be my first contribution to a political campaign; is there a way I can contribute DIRECTLY to McCain/Palin? If I have to, I'll give to the RNC, but I'd prefer that none of my money go to a few of these pinhead RINO's the RNC might want to spend on. I also don't quite understand what the whole "public financing" thing is about...

HONG KONG - Ships belching toxic fumes from diesel fuel contribute to the deaths of tens of thousands of people in Europe, Asia and the United States each year, claims a U.S. report released this week. As many as 60,000 people living in coastal communities along major shipping routes died from lung and heart complaints as a result of high sulfate emissions from ships in 2002, according to the study released Wednesday by the American Chemical Society. With international maritime trade on the rise and little regulation of ship emissions, that death toll could rise to as many as 82,000...

Corning, N.Y. -- You can definitely smell it, but you can't see it. The United States Department of Agriculture has released reports stating that when you smell cow manure, you're also smelling greenhouse gas emissions. That will be the focus of new research that might happen right here in the Southern Tier. Agriculture Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment, Mark Rey, was in Corning Wednesday morning at the Big Flats Plant Materials Center to annouce the award of nearly $20 million in Conservation Innovation Grants to fund 51 research projects across the country designed to refine new technologies helping...

WASHINGTON - Scores of actors, writers, producers and others from the entertainment industry have contributed to Al Franken's Senate campaign, helping the Minnesota Democrat get off to a strong fundraising start. Franken, a former "Saturday Night Live" star who hopes to take on GOP Sen. Norm Coleman (news, bio, voting record) next year, raised the maximum $4,600 from actors such as Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jason Alexander and Larry David, according to a campaign finance report filed Friday. That helped Franken pull in $1.35 million in the first quarter of the year — despite not beginning his fundraising effort until...

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 — For all the talk about the political baggage that President Bush carries this year, his stop in Indiana on Saturday showed that he could still turn on — and, White House strategists say, turn out — the most faithful party voters. Women screamed his name, men chanted “U.S.A.,” and no one doubted that the 4,000 people packed into a high school gymnasium for a rally in Sellersburg were primed to urge friends and neighbors to vote on Nov. 7 for Representative Mike Sodrel, who won his seat by just 1,300 votes two years ago. The scene...

On Monday President Bush flies into Houston to campaign for a congressional candidate who — at one point — looked like a long shot. But an exclusive poll indicates that Shelley Sekula-Gibbs may pull off a political upset and win her write-in campaign for Congress.
