ROME — Pope Francis has condemned what he described as the “massacre” of 153 women and children in Gaza, insisting the victims were “innocent.” Following his Angelus prayer on the Feast of All Saints, the pontiff remembered “all the peoples who are suffering because of war,” adding that “war is always a defeat, always!” War is “ignoble,” he continued, “because it is the triumph of the lie, of falsehood: one seeks the greatest interest for oneself and the greatest damage for the adversary, trampling on human lives, the environment, the infrastructure, everything; and all disguised with lies.”

Laura Bush condemns Democrat 'witch-hunt' By David Rennie in Washington (Filed: 20/02/2004) Laura Bush shed her cosy, non-partisan public image to accuse Democratic chiefs of a "witch-hunt" against her husband, President George W Bush, in interviews released yesterday. Mrs Bush, whose image as a traditional wife and mother has earned her sky-high personal approval ratings, launched a passionate defence of her husband, who has been under withering Democratic fire over unemployment, Iraq and his Vietnam-era military record. Laura Bush: speaking out in defence of her husband "I think it's a political, you know, witch-hunt, actually, on the part of the...

Dissident ayatollah condemns leaders By Anton La Guardia, Diplomatic Editor (Filed: 01/02/2003) Days after being freed from five years of house arrest, Iran's most senior dissident cleric yesterday denounced Teheran's religious rulers as a dictatorship no different from the reviled former shah. The comments by Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri might be a sign that he could become a major force for reform. As the 81-year-old greeted well-wishers to his home in the holy city of Qom, 80 miles south-west of Teheran, hardliners issued a call for the government to take action to ensure that his home "will not be...
