Apple filed a 'Petition for Order Compelling Arbitration and for Injunctive Relief Pending Arbitration' against BYD Precision Manufacturing Co. Ltd and BYD Company Limited on October 29th. Ever since that time, additional filings have been flying into court fast and furious with both redacted and unredacted exhibits and various other motions. Just yesterday the case was reassigned to Judge Hon. Richard Seeborg. The case involves certain iPad mini and iPhone 6 Plus (and presumably iPhone 6s Plus) products using antenna technology from BYD. BYD is trying to stop Apple's production of the noted products in Chinese Courts which would cause...

We've seen Android malware that takes your photos and videos for ransom, and there's one that can mimic your phone's shutdown process and spy on you even though the phone appears to be off. But a new family of malware, detailed by security firm Lookout on Wednesday, is probably the scariest we've heard of: It's so hard to remove that, in some cases, victims might be better off just buying a new device. Lookout's researchers have found 20,000 samples of three pieces of malware, named Shedun, Shuanet, and ShiftyBug, which share a lot of the same code and use similar...

Microsoft has released Build 10586 of Windows 10 to "Windows Insider" previewers, as the first major update to the operating system nears release. This build bears all the signs of a RTM (Release to Manufacturing) release, if the Insider rollout is successful. The build number does not show on the desktop, and in Windows Update it is called "th2_release Professional". The abbreviation is short for Threshold 2, this being the codename for Windows 10. You can think of Threshold 2 as being a fixed version of the initial release. A future release codenamed Redstone is rumoured to be coming late...

CANON CITY, Colo. - Hundreds of students from a single Canon City school are implicated in a nude photo scandal. The school district's investigation has resulted in the forfeiture of a football game and police involvement. "It has come to the attention of the Cañon City School District that a number of our students have engaged in behavior where they take and pass along pictures of themselves that expose private parts of their bodies or their undergarments,” a Thursday statement from the school district said.

Apple Watch has the smartwatch market largely to itself, selling millions of units each quarter while its nearest competitors are lucky to sell in the hundreds of thousands. On Wednesday, research firm Canalys estimated that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shipped nearly 7 million Apple Watch units in Q2 and Q3 combined, the first two quarters of availability. Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts estimate that Apple sold 6 million Apple Watches during that period. Canalys didn't break down shipments by quarter, but Wall Street analysts estimate that Apple sold 3.5 million watches in the September quarter. Apple's closest rival shipped fewer than 300,000 units...

Startup companies are attempting to develop settings that are fun and social to attract young bright minds, while distinguished agencies push towards modern approaches of walls with contemporary art and glass partitions. Many have remarked on the messed up fonts now appearing in so many posts. This can be avoided, though it is a bit of a bother. These bad fonts stem from cutting and pasting apostrophes (') and quotation marks ("). The marks produced from cutting and pasting these marks has always looked different from those caused by hitting the key on one's keyboard. Up until now, though, when posted they have been turned into apostrophes and quotation marks. That is no longer happening. While typing the marks on one's keyboard continues to work fine, cutting and pasting them does not....

The worst thing you can do to a Telemarketer is talk to them!Or so I thought. Maybe the worst thing you can do to a Telemarketer is let your robo talk to them. After all, they call you with their computers, so it’s only fair to let them talk to your computer. That’s where ‘Hello, This Is Lenny’ comes in. ‘Lenny’ is a set of scripts originally used on an Asterisk-based Voice-Over-IP system. You can transfer the call to the extension using these scripts, or have the dialplan automatically route to Lenny’s extension. Check out some of the You Tube...

Google's head of design has some choice words for Windows 10. "#Windows10 ? More like Windows 10 years ago!" tweeted Matias Duarte, Google's (GOOGL, Tech30) design chief. Duarte is known for transforming Android's messy look into its new, highly regarded "Material Design" interface. The minimalist series of cards, pastel colors and animations has been a big hit with Android customers. Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) was actually a pioneer of minimalist tile design with its Windows 8 operating system in 2012. Windows 10 still incorporates much of that design sensibility, but its overall interface is laid out more like Windows 7 and...

It’s no accident that the petition Apple submitted to the Supreme Court last week begins with a reference to Leegin Creative Leather Products, a manufacturer of fancy cowboy belts. Or that the case known as Leegin v. PSKS comes up 81 times in the 250-page document. Apple’s appeal rises or falls on Leegin. And Leegin, it turns out, is a precedent this Supreme Court knows well.Seven of the nine justices who would hear Apple’s appeal were sitting on the high court in 2007 when Leegin was decided. And five of them saw things Apple’s way—or so the company believes.Leegin raises...
  • Has the software stopped recognizing special characters?

    11/03/2015 2:10:59 PM PST · by EveningStar · 55 replies
I thought it was just my computer, but a few others are reporting this too. Who else has experienced this?: It appears that the software is not recognizing special characters such as the smart quote, smart apostrophe, and em (long dash), and other character map symbols - at least in many cases. Until this is solved, a good workaround would be to use a text editor to replace the smart quote, smart apostrophe, and em with regular quotes, regular apostrophes, and double dashes respectively.
