(Oh, and BTW... Windows 10 will be injected into your box by Redmond's mad doctors...) Microsoft will stop all sales of Windows 7 Pro to PC makers on Halloween 2016. Satya Nadella’s firm has quietly let slip that October 31, 2016, will be the final day for PC makers to buy copies of the operating system for pre-install. Microsoft updated its product support lifecycle page, here, in October with the change noticed on Friday. The firm stopped supplying Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate to PC makers on Saturday October 31. Before naming the 2016 date for Windows...

Last week changes to the Windows 10 upgrade path mean it is going to become increasingly difficult for any non-techy users to avoid being pushed to Microsoft new operating system. But given Windows 10 is better than Windows 7 and Windows 8, why would that be a problem? Because of policies like this… Speaking to PC World, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Joe Belfiore explained that Windows 10 is constantly tracking how it operates and how you are using it and sending that information back to Microsoft by default. More importantly he also confirmed that, despite offering some options to turn...

The clitoris: a gastronomic delight typical of Galician cuisine, according to a town that promoted its local festival after using Google Translate. Rapini, the speciality of the Galician town of As Pontes. Photo: Laurel F/Flickr ========================================================================================================================= A town hall in northwestern Spain was left red-faced after a Google Translate error led to it advertising its local leaf vegetable celebration as a much more X-rated affair. One of the highlights of the year in the town of As Pontes in Galicia, northwestern Spain, is its annual rapini festival, when townsfolk celebrate the town's speciality, the leafy green vegetable similar to spinach....

BITCOIN RISKS AND SKEPTICISM With bitcoin skyrocketing again (up 16.44% in the last 24 hours as I write this, per Coinmarketcap.com) I wanted to outline reasons to be cautious about getting involved with Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a revolutionary advance in financial technology, but there is a learning curve involved and many serious pitfalls for unwary users. This will not be a general primer on bitcoin or how it works. I'll field any questions on those lines to the best of my ability, but first and foremost I want to give people a list of risks to consider before investing or...

Apple products are commonly considered to be relatively secure, but researchers claim to have found a way of remotely controlling a new iPhone running the latest operating system. Before you panic that your handset may be infiltrated, however, the hack was part of a challenge set to demonstrate it is possible to remotely jailbreak an iPhone or iPad running iOS 9.1, rather than a criminal activity. An anonymous hacker or team of hackers, has been rewarded with $1 million by security start-up Zerodium for their efforts.

The value of digital currency Bitcoin has soared 70% - and analysts think it could become one of the world's major reserve currencies within 15 years. The cryptocurrency has made big gains over the past two months, since it hit a low of $213 (£138) in August. But as it's currently trading at $370 (£240), it's nowhere near its early-2014 peak of $1,100 (£715). Some have speculated that Bitcoin interest from MasterCard and Bain Capital Ventures has legitimised the currency, which is the payment method of choice on the dark web. Others say it could be down to people using...

My question to freepers is should I delete all google, bing, yahoo cookies periodically? Does this help any? I really like google images and maps and same that bing and yahoo have for maps and images.... So how do I minimize their data collection? I already use track-me-not on chrome and firefox. This program makes useless random searches a few times per minute so that my own searches get lost in it. But I wonder how effective this strategy is? IOW duck duck go etc that do not track you are limited search engines///// Plus does google, bing, yahoo insert...

It was precisely two months ago, on September 2nd, when we explained that as a result of China's recent currency devaluation, in order to mitigate the inevitable capital outflows that such an FX move would unleash, China was "scrambling to enforce capital controls" in order to prevent the exit of hot (and not so hot) money from China's economy. We then said the following to explain why "this is great news for bitcoin": Which is why we would not be surprised to see another push higher in the value of bitcoin: it was earlier this summer when the digital currency,...

About halfway through the conversation at Money20/20, discussion turns to Kodak. It’s not without merit. The photography giant once boasted more than 145,000 employees and $16bn in global revenues, but its empire all but crumbled due to rise of digital photography. To digital currency proponents, this shift has been held up as an example of what happens when incumbents fail to innovate when new technologies lead to the creation of new behaviors. In the face of tech that enables value to be sent at a low cost across national borders, industry supporters have long argued remittances are the first and...

Microsoft's decision to push out Windows 10 upgrades as automatic Windows Update downloads is one of those ideas that sounded great in a Redmond meeting room, but will cause more problems than it solves. Right from the get-go Microsoft has made it clear that it is looking for a very fast rollout of Windows 10. The new operating system was offered as a free upgrade for some users – a first for Microsoft – and ever since the launch, Microsoft has been hustling people to upgrade, by fair means or foul. Earlier this month El Reg's tips inbox hit overload...

For years, people have wondered if Google would merge its Android and Chrome operating systems, and the company has steadfastly held to them important but distinct pieces of its strategy. That might be changing: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has been working for two years to merge Chrome OS and Android.

BITCOIN has a bad reputation. The decentralised digital cryptocurrency, powered by a vast computer network, is notorious for the wild fluctuations in its value, the zeal of its supporters and its degenerate uses, such as extortion, buying drugs and hiring hitmen in the online bazaars of the “dark netâ€. This is unfair. The value of a bitcoin has been pretty stable, at around $250, for most of this year. Among regulators and financial institutions, scepticism has given way to enthusiasm (the European Union recently recognised it as a currency). But most unfair of all is that bitcoin’s shady image causes...

If you own a pirated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you'll have the chance to come clean. If you pirated Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, Microsoft wants to welcome you back—all is forgiven. Microsoft said Thursday that it will run an “experiment†to offer a path for those users who have either pirated or purchased an unlicensed copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to download a licensed copy from Microsoft itself, or to use a code from a third-party reseller. Either way, the licensed Windows 10 software will be used to update the PC with a valid...

Capturing (or retaining) a sizable amount of your established user base is a top priority for any iterative software launch. Given that Windows is the most widely used OS in the world, Microsoft had something of a captive audience ahead of the launch of Windows 10, but that shouldn't detract from the company's accomplishment in garnering installs. Three months after it launched on July 29, Windows 10 has been installed more than 120 million times, according to a report from WinBeta. Microsoft's goal is one billion installs over the course of three years -- an optimistic aim, but one that...

Google will fold its Chrome operating system used in personal computers into the Android mobile OS, according to The Wall Street Journal. Beginning in 2017, Google will only have a single operating system on the market, with Android featured on tablets, smartphones, and notebook computers. Google will show an early version of the new unified Android OS next year, The WSJ said, citing anonymous sources. The move should help unify Google's software efforts and make its platform more appealing to third-party software developers. Until now Google has maintained a clear delineation between its two operating systems, The Chrome OS, based...
