For years, people have wondered if Google would merge its Android and Chrome operating systems, and the company has steadfastly held to them important but distinct pieces of its strategy. That might be changing: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has been working for two years to merge Chrome OS and Android.

Not sure if this will be a good thing or a bad thing. Attempts to merge desktop/notebook/tablet OS and "Look and Feel" have been only moderately successful at best. (witness Win 8's touch interface, Ubuntu's unity interface...)

Guess this will depend on if it is more of a mash-up of the two (ugh!) or if they incorporate elements of one into the other for added functionality and wider use... Have to see.

Wonder what this will do to the existing Chromebook inventory and functionality? The article indicates some confusion and disagreements on what they are going to do.

The OS is far more than the look and feel. It’s like an iceburg 90/10. Thats just all most people see.

Maybe Goog will even figure out how to make money with them.

I would like to see a real (Linux/Unix/Proprietary) OS on a Pad/iPod device. Apple locks away the file system, Android is controlled by Google, whom I do not trust. The current mobile Linux products have gotten poor reviews. I was interested in the HP Pads, but they bailed out altogether.

Your other major choice is Microsoft for phones/tablets. Though I don’t know how much longer they’ll be in that market.
