"Across the board, our goal is to make the best in the categories we choose to compete in." — PHIL SCHILLER CUPERTINO, California — In retrospect, it was easy to miss — a bit of combined technology never really seen before in a laptop. Everyone missed it, even those who tore down the ultra-portable MacBook, even those who looked right at it. The little strip of black along the two back edges of the MacBook’s twin speakers could easily have been mistaken for a bit of shielding or a vibration dampener. Except, that's not what it is. Some like...

I upgraded to Windows 10 on Monday morning. It went surprisingly well. I had a few issues but they seemed to require minor tweaking or downloading new versions of existing apps. Now I am down to some of the more intractable issues. The current issue deals with different web pages replacing some characters with others. I got rid of most of the question marks in a diamond but not all of them. The following passage is from a FR thread and is meant for illustration only. I have turned the offending characters red. You might think that it’s (should be...

Redmond confirms display spasm fix coming People who bought the first batch of Microsoft's Surface Book slab-tops are furious that a glitch causes the screens to flicker. Microsoft's support forums and the Surface subreddit are filled with folks claiming their displays erratically wink completely on and off. This happens, we're told, whether the tablet is running on its own or when it's docked in its base station. Microsoft has confirmed a fix is on the way. "A small number of customers have flagged some issues with their Surface Book," a Redmond spokesperson told The Register. "We are working hard to...

Ordering Apple to access data against its will would be akin to making a reluctant drug company carry out a lethal injection, a US judge has said.Judge James Orenstein was hearing a US government request to make it retrieve information from a locked iPhone seized by law enforcement officers. On Monday, the judge expressed doubt that he had the authority to do so.Apple has agreed to similar requests previously but is now refusing, saying it would erode customers' trust.'Inflammatory' Referring to the US Department of Justice's request for him to order Apple to help it unlock the phone, the judge said:...

Apple Inc's mobile wallet Apple Pay is winning over more U.S. households a year after its launch, but growth has slowed, research released on Monday showed. Fourteen percent of U.S. households with credit cards had signed up for the payment option by the end of September, up from 11 percent in February, Phoenix Marketing International said at a payments conference in Las Vegas. "A very rapid initial threshold was achieved by Apple Pay and it is still growing but the growth rate has slowed down," said Greg Weed, director of card performance research at Phoenix.

Visa and DocuSign unveiled a new proof-of-concept this week that leverages the bitcoin blockchain for recordkeeping. The project, outlined in a 26th October blog post and debuted at Money20/20 in Las Vegas, focuses on digitizing the process of leasing a car. Bitcoin transactions are used to create a digital fingerprint for each vehicle, with new transactions published throughout the leasing process. "From the driver's seat, the customer then chooses the lease options for the car – low, mid or high mileage, for example and DocuSigns the leasing contract right there and then. This is all in turn updated on the...

Apple has officially posted its Q4 2015 earnings results with $51.5 billion in revenue and $11.1 billion in profit from the July to September quarter. While Apple isn’t breaking out Apple Watch sales, Q4 is only the second quarter to include numbers for the product (grouped with iPods, Apple TVs, and more in the Other category) and the first to include any iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sales. Apple previously announced over 13 million iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launch sales with purchases completed by Saturday, September 26th included in today’s numbers. Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2015 fourth...

Do you all get full-page orange MALWARE ALERTS from Google when you try to post on the Free Republic? Could it be an attempt to strangle FR?
-
I mostly browse FreeRepublic on my phone, opening several links at a time as I scroll down the page. I just had 4 pages with this warning. When I clicked on the bottom to ignore the warning, it says that FreeRepublic is a known phishing scam. Looks like someone is spreading a few untruths about us.

His name is Morgan, but it hasn’t always been his name. What it was before doesn’t legally matter any longer. What does matter, to us, is the concentric circles by which “Morgan” arrived…came to be. Morgan doesn’t know any better. Many metaphors of consciousness can be applied, but for Morgan, your arguments on his condition fall outside of his realm of concern. Morgan is Morgan, and what Morgan does in the present is all that matters. What might have been his reality, to you, before “the incident,” is simply pabulum to Morgan. To Morgan, you are children trying to complete...

"Steve Jobs," the dramatic, fictionalized depiction of Apple's cofounder written by Aaron Sorkin and starring Michael Fassbender, has flopped on its national release, bringing in just $7.3 million for a film that cost $30 million to make. The movie previously opened to the highest per-theater average of the year in a limited release involving just three theaters in New York City and Los Angeles, resulting in some predictions that the movie might bring in as much as $19 million over its opening weekend. However, outside of key urban audiences, the film failed to attract interest across the 2,000 theaters showing...

I have an ink hog Canon MG5220. Not only do I get dull colors and muddy resolution when I print, the cartridges don't last worth squat. I don't use that much color in my printing, yet it seems like I'm always running out of one color or another. The replacement package of ink tanks is about $60, so I have decided to look for a printer that doesn't drink the ink. I would prefer to spend less than the cost 2 packages of replacement cartridges (>$120). I want color integrity so that what I'm seeing on my computer screen is...
