BYDDY ▼‎-0.54%‎ TESLA, INC. TSLA ▼‎-3.67%‎ Now, investigators from the European Commission will visit Chinese EV makers as part of a probe into whether they have an unfair advantage thanks to government subsidies. In the coming weeks, the EU investigators will visit BYD, Geely, and SAIC, according to Reuters. Their visits will help determine whether the EU imposes higher tariffs to protect European carmakers. BYD recently overtook Elon Musk’s Tesla as the global leader in sales of electric vehicles. Backed by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, the carmaker keeps its costs low partly by owning the entire supply chain of its...

The Clinton Library 'swiftly' deleted a post that asked people to guess who the ex-president sent his first email to in 1998 after the library was trolled with answers that it was pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The incident took place on Monday to mark World Typing Day, a day held each year on January 8, and one week after New Year's Day, a day known to 'encourage people to express themselves via written communication.' The historic post shows a photo of Clinton sitting in front of a laptop computer, looking intently at the screen, with both of his hands typing on...

George Carlin’s daughter has criticized an artificial intelligence-generated voice of her comedian father used for an hourlong standup comedy special based on his catalog of work. “My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain and imagination,” Kelly Carlin said on X. “No machine will ever replace his genius. These AI-generated products are clever attempts at trying to recreate a mind that will never exist again.” She added that his work should “speak for itself.” “Humans are so afraid of the void that we can’t let what has fallen into it stay there,” she said....

PyPI is the official Python Package Index that currently contains 500,972 projects, 5,228,535 million releases, 9,950,103 million files, and 770,841 users. PyPI helps users locate and install software developed and released by the Python community as well as serving as a repository where developers can distribute their software.Recently, cybersecurity specialist ESET discovered a series of malicious Python projects within PyPI, each of which deployed a customized backdoor containing cyberespionage functionality. The malicious code allowed file execution and file exfiltration, and could even -- in certain scenarios -- enable screenshots to be taken of a user's screen. ESET also reported that,...

Saliency map highlights areas that contribute to the similarity between the two fingerprints from the same person. Credit: Gabe Guo,/Columbia Engineering ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From "Law and Order" to "CSI," not to mention real life, investigators have used fingerprints as the gold standard for linking criminals to a crime. But if a perpetrator leaves prints from different fingers in two different crime scenes, these scenes are very difficult to link, and the trace can go cold. It's a well-accepted fact in the forensics community that fingerprints of different fingers of the same person—"intra-person fingerprints"—are unique and, therefore, unmatchable. A team led by...

THE SCOOP Google is laying off hundreds of people working on its voice-activated Google Assistant software and eliminating a similar number of roles on its knowledge and information product teams, a Google spokesperson confirmed to Semafor on Wednesday. Google told Semafor the restructuring would help improve Google Assistant as it explores integrating newer artificial intelligence technology into its products. The company announced in October that it was using its generative AI chatbot Bard to build a new version of Google Assistant that “extends beyond voice, understands and adapts to you and handles personal tasks in new ways.” Google has been...

One of the most staggering things to come out of the mid-flight incident in which the door of an Alaskan Airlines flight ripped off moments after take-off is that one passenger’s iPhone was allegedly found under a bush in working condition after plummeting 16,000 feet. This is wild because other iPhones have been unable to survive getting knocked off the table. According to CBS News, a man named Sean Bates stumbled across a phone sitting under a bush in Washington. He said that the phone was in airplane mode and was displaying a baggage receipt for Alaska Airlines Flight 1282....

A tried and true anti-human, Kerry is a depopulation activist who seeks to surrender America’s sovereignty to the ESG mafia. Kerry, the once-failed presidential candidate, became America’s first “Special Presidential Envoy for Climate” in 2021, on the day of President Biden’s inauguration. The “climate czar” has refused to disclose the names of his staff members, leading to concerns of possible collusion between Kerry’s office and radical “environmentalist” groups. CES, one of the world’s largest consumer electronics shows, can be overwhelming, with its dizzying array of new products and company announcements. Even if you spent the entire week combing through booths, you probably still wouldn’t see every new gadget or hear every promise to deliver a more efficient, productive, fulfilled life. Some companies are close to living up to those claims. Others aren’t even close. And telling them apart can be tricky at best. Let the Help Desk cut through the noise — that’s why you have us. Art collectors consider fraud and provenance concerns as the top risk to their collections, beating out other issues like damage during travel, natural deterioration, and environmental disasters, according to a recently published wealth report published by insurance company Chubb. The report surveyed 800 North American collectors about their assets, what they collect, and what worries them the most. While most of the respondents said they collected fine art, jewelry, cars, wine, and other valuables they were passionate about, more than one third (around 38 percent) said they collected those items as investments. Concerns about those investments retaining or increasing their...

When he was two years old, Stephen Thaler had a near-death experience. Thinking it was candy, he ate two dozen cold medicine tablets, and washed them down with kerosene that, in a parenting misstep too common in the 1950s, had been stored in a Coke bottle. “I had the typical experience of falling through the tunnel and arriving at what looked like a blue star. Around it I saw little figures, little angels around a sphere,” Thaler, now 74, told Art in America from the suburban Missouri office of his AI company, Imagination Engines. “The most trusted people in my...

Consumers should anticipate two major alterations to their shopping experience in the coming year, an expert has warned. A consumer specialist is forecasting a grim conclusion for two contentious supermarket policies that could reshape shoppers’ habits. Supermarket Guru, Phil Lempert has projected retail tendencies for a quarter of a century, and his recent predictions might come as good news to some shoppers. In a conversation with The U.S. Sun, the expert explained that security concerns and consumer preferences may be the main drivers of these changes. “From a security standpoint, what’s happened is the retailers with self-checkout have had to...
