The app, SafeStop, allows members of the public to video chat with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies before the in-person traffic stop, which the app developers said will “de-escalate traffic stops and transform police-motorist interactions.” With traffic stops carrying potential life-and-death stakes, a pilot program using SafeStop intends to lower the temperature, allowing drivers and officers to communicate virtually before meeting face-to-face. “When pulled over, users are provided with information and instructions on how to facilitate dialogue during their traffic stop and then can immediately make video contact with police officers while they are being stopped,” the company said...

On a quiet cul de sac in suburban Los Angeles, the installation of Martin Guevara and Grace Kuo's prefab accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, caused quite a stir in the neighborhood. "It was like a block party," said Guevara, 68. "All of our neighbors came out to watch." Guevara was referring to a prefab ADU designed and built by Villa Homes; the 850-square-foot home was craned over the couple's existing home and placed into position in their backyard in the South Bay last year. "It was in two halves," said his daughter Melanie Guevara, 33, who lives in the ADU...

I will firstly admit that I am the opposite of Tech Savvy. I resisted moving on from my WebTV gadget to my laptop computer for years. I only stopped, when customer service at Best Buy didn't even know what WebTV was and had to Tweet their managers or their Dads. That being said, I have noticed some difficulty getting FreeRepublic to show up on my cell phone (or Android). It first happened last Wednesday. I would press the button in my Favorites for FreeRep, but I would be lead to my last search page on Google, often about topics having...

Joe Biden's relationship with his attorney general, Merrick Garland, is so icy it is 'in the deep freeze', according to a report on Saturday. Biden and his aides are infuriated by Garland's decision to appoint special counsels to investigate both Biden's handling of classified documents, and his son Hunter's business affairs. They told The Wall Street Journal that Garland was seen as going too far in his effort to appear independent from Biden, who appointed him. But Garland's aides told the paper that the widely-respected, low-key official was simply trying to stop any suspicion that Biden was influencing his decisions....

Which side are you on?If you thought ordering pineapple on your pizza was divisive, just wait until you hear what DiGiorno is cooking up next. Following the viral success of #PicklePizza, a hashtag that has more than 16 million views on TikTok to date, the fine folks at DiGiorno thought it would be a good idea to bring that creation to life. But, rather than just present a pizza that would surely enrage people who think pickles have no business being on a pizza, the brand is splitting this pizza 50-50, topping the opposite side with pineapple because, sure, let’s...

Democrats and left-wing operatives in the mainstream media say there is “no evidence” that Joe Biden did anything wrong to warrant impeachment. This key Democrat “talking point” has been carefully crafted as the evidence and seriousness of Biden’s corrupt actions is enough to make your blood boil. In response, the House Oversight Committee has compiled a startling list of 22 pieces of evidence that show Joe Biden’s involvement in his son’s influence-peddling scheme that raked in millions. • 1) In July 2023, former Biden business associate Devon Archer described how Joe Biden was “The Brand” and was used to send...

French authorities said the iPhone 12 exposed people to too much electromagnetic radiation and ordered it withdrawn from sale. This move could lead to EU-wide restrictions. A French government watchdog agency demanded that tech giant Apple withdraw the iPhone 12 from the French market this week after determining that it emits too much electromagnetic radiation. EU countries will now have three months to object to the French restriction but if they do not object, it could lead to EU-wide restrictions on Apple's iPhone 12, a European Commission spokesperson confirmed. This is due to the EU directive on radio equipment. France's...

Guess their favorite tech brand isn’t the apple of their eye — or, i — anymore. Smartphone fans have been griping about Apple’s new devices since the arguably anti-climactic announcement of the forthcoming iPhone 15 on Tuesday. On X (formerly Twitter), users have gone so far as to claim “innovation died with Steve Jobs,” the co-founder and former Apple CEO who died in 2011 from cancer at the age of 56. The new iPhones, slated to drop on Sept. 22, feature never-before-seen color-infused glass — an “industry first” — and new charging ports.

I cleaned my computer cache (IE files; Internet "history"; and CC cleaner). I then went online to Walmart link. Then my computer screen had the dreaded pseudo Microsoft warning: "You have malware; call our number..." There were several flashing banners, etc. I shut the computer down; rebooted; cleaned cache; etc. I didn't get the scam from the Walmart website, did I? Microsoft's website says this is a common scam currently, and my Malwarebytes didn't catch it. Neither did AVG. Did this piggyback something? Is it a time release program? I was on Zillow, Freerepublic, 3 gun forums, etc. thnx

A scientific journal was forced to retract a paper it published last month after it was discovered the authors used the artificial intelligence application ChatGPT to write it. The paper, published Aug. 9 in the journal Physica Scripta, was an attempt to uncover new solutions to a complicated math equation, but included the phrase “Regenerate response” on the third page — something one eagle-eyed reader recognized was the phrase of a button on ChatGPT, according to a report from Nature. The authors of the paper have since acknowledged they used ChatGPT to help write the manuscript, something that wasn’t caught...

The Group of 20 leaders have agreed to a plan to eventually impose digital currencies and digital IDs on their respective populations, despite fears that governments will use them to monitor their peoples' spending and crush dissent. The G20, which is currently under India’s presidency, adopted a final declaration on the subject over the weekend in New Delhi. The meeting, which included the world’s leading economies, announced last week that they had agreed to build the necessary infrastructure to implement digital currencies and IDs.

When scientists said that they had used artificial intelligence to determine that Raphael had, in fact, painted a work whose attribution had long been contested, they received rapturous praise in publications across the globe. But now a more complicated picture of the situation has emerged, with some experts questioning the accuracy of the attribution. One scientist’s study of the attribution suggested a completely different result from the one used to certify the Raphael attribution, and two museum professionals told the Guardian Saturday that AI had a high likelihood of being incorrect.
