On a quiet cul de sac in suburban Los Angeles, the installation of Martin Guevara and Grace Kuo's prefab accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, caused quite a stir in the neighborhood. "It was like a block party," said Guevara, 68. "All of our neighbors came out to watch." Guevara was referring to a prefab ADU designed and built by Villa Homes; the 850-square-foot home was craned over the couple's existing home and placed into position in their backyard in the South Bay last year. "It was in two halves," said his daughter Melanie Guevara, 33, who lives in the ADU behind her childhood home with husband Devon Hollowood, 34. "It was already outfitted, including the appliances."

Small double wide
My smaller city in a KC suburb is trying to pull this s*it now. Tear down the older homes and replace with duplexes, multi-family homes, or ADUs in the backyards. You know, equity.

Hundreds of billions for Ukraine, trillions for globalist wars tens of millions of illegal aliens....
How about some nice shipping containers for Americans to live in? Looking sharp America!
Not too different from the casitas that are all over Arizona.
I’d love one for my daughter.
The solution is the removal of progressive regulations at the local level. Let the free market solve the housing shortage.
Convert the garage, get a couple more in there! Better yet, put a couple of tough sheds in the back yard for more living space!
Is triumphing of working class victory over capitalist plots as government housing gives chance for basic needs of straphanger families.
Similar to modular homes of decades ago — mobile homes without the wheels.
Being California, the regs are probably very restrictive and permits cost about as much as the ADUs. Utility hookups probably cost a small fortune, too.
My in-laws previous home was a Sears home built in the 50s. Still standing
I remember a HS project way back in 1973 our project was to design a 640 sq foot home. Seemed small at the time but old army prefab homes were about the same size.
Now? What? 300sq feet or less? Even with a wide angle lens they look small.
You will own nothing and like it
“Millennials and Gen Z can’t afford a home”
They can’t afford white babies, either.
Smash capitalism.
My friend the realtor has this conversation several times a month:
Ring, ring.
Hello Mr. Realtor here.
We want you to buy this neighborhood for us to make rentals.
No you don’t.
Oh yes it will be nice. We’ve done this in Oslo, Toronto and Victoria.
It will be a ghetto and your property value will plummet.
Oh no, we have property managers.
And the tenants have guns to shoot your property managers.
Simple homes like after WWII
This price is $850/sf. Plus they need to buy land/lot, clearing, transport, utility improvements, etc. And then there is resale value.....
Oops - $558/sf
That's nuts!
