At an Aug. 30 “bou embolat” (bull with balls) event in Alcàsser, in the Valencia province of Spain, a runner was attacked while playing with his cell phone. He barely sees the bull until the very last second — but by then, it was too late. As he tries to escape, the unidentified man trips and falls. A bronze artifact salvaged from an ancient Greek shipwreck, recognized as the world’s oldest computer, may hold the secrets of the universe. When we talk of the history of computers, most of us will refer to the evolution of the modern digital desktop PC, charting the decades-long developments by the likes of Apple and Microsoft. What many don’t consider, however, is that computers have been around much longer. In fact, they date back millennia to a time when they were analog creations. Today, the world’s oldest known “computer” is the Antikythera mechanism, a corroded bronze artifact which was found at the...

LGBTQ dating app Grindr ended its remote work policies and forced employees to relocate. Nearly half of its staff left. In early August, Grindr announced a return-to-office mandate. The policy gave workers two weeks to choose between relocating to their respective team’s newly assigned “hub” city to work in-person twice a week or leave the company with severance, according to the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Approximately 80 of Grindr’s 178 workers were forced to leave as of August 31, the CWA said Wednesday. Many of these workers were hired remotely and were required to relocate to new “hub” cities...

Item ordered on August 31 as of this morning has not yet shipped. This is an item sold and stocked by Amazon, it does not involve a third-party vendor. I tried to cancel the order this morning online. Received an email stating the following verbatim: "Unfortunately, we weren’t able to cancel the items you requested and these items will soon be shipped. We apologize for the inconvenience." What? What does "soon be shipped" have to do with it? That's the same as saying the order hasn't been shipped. In other words, you just can't cancel. In the past Amazon said...

In his 2019 book The Madness of the Crowds: Gender, Race and Identity, Douglas Murray exposed the cultural insanity that has gripped so much of the modern world. He pointed out that, no sooner was there more equality than ever between the sexes that the war on men was launched. And no sooner was there more equality than ever between the races that the war on whiteness was launched. Murray brought a wide array of arguments to support his theses, but none were more striking than the images that came up on Google searches for specific terms and phrases. It...

@elonmusk Perhaps we should run a poll on this? RE: @EvaVlaar The fact that #BanTheADL is trending shows how done people are with the “we’re labeling everything we don’t like as hateful/racist/dangerous/far-right” BS. People aren’t afraid of your intimidation tactics anymore, @JGreenblattADL. Your labels have lost their power. [THREAD ...]@WallStreetSilv Yes. The ADL, ACLU and SPLC are radical left wing hate groups. @elonmusk It would be difficult to describe them as centrist @krassenstein You really have to make the option to only allow for blue checkmarks to participate in polls. I’ve noticed that the bot activity around polls are pretty...

Tesla just chopped $3,000 off the price of its “full self-driving” beta software. The 20% cut brings the cost of FSD down to $12,000 in North America. That’s precisely what Tesla previously charged for the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), before hiking the fee to $15,000 about a year ago. Tesla vehicles come standard with some driver-assistance features, dubbed “Autopilot.” The automaker charges $6,000 for what it calls “Enhanced Autopilot,” which introduces some extras to help with parking, as well as pulling the vehicle out of tight spots via a smartphone app. For a lot more dough, Tesla owners can...
