Key Points 8GB and 16GB make a big difference in performance. The key difference is the volume of RAM and how much stress you need to put on your PC. 16GB is the clear winner for any PC. 8GB and 16GB of RAM isn’t the usual comparison. Obviously, more RAM would be better, so we’re going to look at the comparison from a few different angles. We’re going to look at what 16GB can do that 8GB can’t. When does 8GB stop being enough? What are the differences in performance and available features? We’ll look at what we can and...

Consequences can come at you fast or slow. If you’re a trillion-dollar company, you get to choose which, a bit, but you can never escape completely. Amazon is burning billions on Alexa because voice assistants need massive infrastructure but can't be monetized. Google Cloud is $700 million in the red as of last earnings and heading south to a state of madness like a New Jersey retiree. These are mature products in saturated markets. You don't need an MBA to know what will happen. But even the dean of Harvard Business School can't say when. The big confounding factor is reputation....

Did we think about Elon Musk more in 2022 than we did a year ago? That thought might seem inconceivable, considering that just 12 months after he was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2021, Musk has become even more of a global presence. Now that doesn’t mean life has been perfect for the world’s richest man: while he’s recently dominated headlines for his turbulent Twitter takeover, his other ventures have not gone unscathed. While still the darling of the EV industry, Tesla has lost nearly half its market value since Musk first made his bid for Twitter, potentially threatening his...

It turns out Gen Zers have a common secret. They’re not as comfortable with new technology as older generations would typically presume. Sure, they may have grown up with instant access to information and an affinity for digital devices that older generations had to learn. But that has led to a widespread presumption that Gen Zers are therefore innately good with tech. Now, new research is showing that may not be the case at all when it comes to workplace tech. In fact, this presumption from older generations is leading a larger number of young professionals to experience “tech shame,”...

@PeterSweden7 THIS IS HUGE The latest Twitter Files show that the government told Twitter to censor criticism of the mRNA vaccines. First they push this worthless shot on people, then censor the doctors who question it. Biggest medical scandal in history.

The app reportedly causing all of these issues is MacKeeper. Ironically, MacKeeper is designed to keep Macs safe from malware by offering cleaning, security, privacy, and performance tools. Yikes. According to the Elastic Security Labs report, 48% of Macs end up being infected with malware from MacKeeper.

Thirteen years ago, a man was sitting at the Denver airport. Bored, he turned his attention to his favorite website: “I see a lot of people on laptops around using the free wifi,” he wrote on the popular subreddit r/AskReddit. “Just on the off chance, any fellow Redditors here?” What followed was a lively exchange among the platform’s most ardent superusers deciding how best to identify a fellow Reddit obsessive in the “real world.” The phrase they landed on combined several pieces of mid-aughts message board slang and coded inside jokes, yet, crucially, was otherwise meaningless: “The narwhal bacons at...

Recently, a thread headline appeared here in BOLD CHARACTERS—absolutely unprecedented in my experience. I would like the option of similarly enhancing part of the titles of my daily Bible-art threads. After inquiring of that poster, I am informed—cryptically—that the secret lies in UNICODE HIGH-ORDER CHARACTERS. Knowing nothing about computer coding, I searched the internet on this subject and very quickly was completely out of my depth.

@JohnCornyn The Senate voted on government funding just 3 days before Christmas because Democrats, who control the agenda, didn't do their job and pass funding bills earlier. Senate Democrats have failed in one of our most basic responsibilities. This morning, Senate Republicans demanded & I voted for amendments to: • Keep Title 42 in place • Remove earmarks • Support 9/11 victims’ families • End funding migrant transport in the U.S. While my provisions to support Sept. 11 families and to allow state & local govts to reallocate unspent COVID funds to other important priorities did pass, Senate Democrats blocked...

Ok, so I'm behind on computer tech: So far as I can tell, most current desktop and laptop computers have gone to* a single (TRRS) Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve audio jack (plug) for audio in and out, configured as: Tip = Out/Left, Outer Ring = Out/Right, Inner Ring = Ground, Sleeve = Mic/In. Well, hooey bluey, this means there's no stereo line input... Is the best option to use a stereo-line-to-USB adaptor?**

Truck drivers launched a strike last week to protest high fuel prices in the Arab kingdom. The strike and protests have spread to several cities across Jordan. Clashes erupted in multiple cities on Thursday, with police using tear gas to disperse them. Videos from the strike and protests flooded TikTok and Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said Friday it was suspending the popular short-form video application “after its misuse and failing to deal with publications inciting violence and disorder.” Internet service was also disrupted in the cities of Maan, where the police officer was killed, and Karak. Both have seen protests...

A prominent “woke” New York City artist, who “identifies” as “non-binary queer,” has been caught trying to rape a 9-year-old boy, according to police. 35-year-old Efrem Zelony-Mindell was arrested on Friday for trying to arrange sexual intercourse with a 9-year-old boy in NYC. Solar space heating is tricky. Air is harder to keep warm than water, and while most of us need a shower on a hot day—we tend to want space heating when the sun is not doing enough for us. Nevertheless, from a Mad Max style partially solar heated home, through a DIY solar heater from old campaign signs (yeah, politics and hot air...) to a soda can solar panel, we've seen plenty of attempts at harnessing the rays of the sun to actively heat the air inside our homes. Here the folks at Fair Companies present one Seattle man's attempt...

Two men have been charged with illegally gaining access to Ring home security cameras in a series of swatting schemes to live stream the police response to the bogus emergencies, federal prosecutors said Monday. The pair allegedly gained access to home security cameras throughout the country from Nov. 7 - 13 in 2020. They obtained access to the Ring devices by hacking the Yahoo! email accounts belonging to victims, authorities said. After aging access to the Ring cameras, Nelson and McCarty allegedly made false emergency reports to local law enforcement agencies where the victims live in an effort to elicit...
