Every nation gets the royal family it deserves. Americans once had Hollywood royalty, but Hollywood has decayed into virtue-signaling and television streaming. Meghan and Harry are pretenders to the throne of American royalty for the 21st century. A second-rate actress and a spare-part prince are parodying a European past for a fanbase that cannot remember it. They are speaking their truth even though parts of it are demonstrably false. Americans must have done something terrible to deserve these two. The Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan is not so much a documentary as it is a six-hour Instagram post. It purports...

President Joe Biden is pressing ahead with a controversial criminal case against Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. Assange has been languishing for close to four years in the UK’s harsh Belmarsh Prison while appealing extradition to the United States, where he faces espionage and computer intrusion charges that could land him in a maximum security prison for 175 years. Meanwhile, the U.S case against Assange is facing mounting criticism at home as a threat to press freedom. In a twist this month that could have far-reaching implications for the case, two people are asking the Justice Department to indict them...

The media has been having a field day since Elon Musk’s poll asking users if he should step down as the head of Twitter, which now shows the votes favor him leaving. But questions have arisen as to why Musk would conduct such a poll this early into his role as CEO of the platform. Clearly, it does not make sense Musk would put himself in such a vulnerable position, especially as he’s already made himself a ‘deep state’ enemy number one in the wake of the explosive Twitter files releases. Currently, various media headlines are attempting to link the...

I just produced a PowerPoint Chanukah card. It came out very cute. Now I'd like to send it to all my friends. I'd like it to automatically play when they click on the attachment, and not need mouse clicks to activate all the animations I put in. How do I do that? Thanks in advance, PP maven FReepers, and a happy Chanukah.

Representative James Comer (R., Ky.), the incoming chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said Friday the FBI “needs to be dismantled” after the latest installment of the “Twitter files” revealed the bureau was in constant contact with Twitter before Elon Musk took over. The FBI exchanged more than 150 emails with former Twitter Trust and Safety head Yoel Roth between January 2020 and November 2022, journalist Matt Taibbi reported on Friday. Roth’s team worked to censor the New York Post‘s October 2020 report on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

As a follow up to my question regarding my Dell 5490 laptop: If I exceed the present RAM capacity (8 GB), then the SSD page (swap) file comes into play. The present swap file is 1.25 GB, on the 256 GB NVMe "C" drive. Reads and writes to the SSD of course "wear" it gradually. I am guessing my best bet is to increase the RAM. But, how does that compare to putting in a bigger NVMe boot drive (which I plan to do anyway) and increasing the page file size?

Optical High Density Nanolaser Array Driver Researchers have developed a new all-optical method for driving multiple high-density nanolaser arrays using light traveling down a single optical fiber. The optical driver creates programmable patterns of light via interference. Credit: Myung-Ki Kim, Korea University New all-optical pumping chip-based nanolaser technology could aid in meeting the ever-growing need to move more data faster. A new all-optical approach for driving multiple highly dense nanolaser arrays has been developed by researchers in Korea. The method could enable chip-based optical communication links that process and move data much faster than current electronic-based devices. “The development of...

The arrival of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a program that generates sophisticated text in response to any prompt you can imagine, may signal the end of writing assignments altogether—and maybe even the end of writing as a gatekeeper, a metric for intelligence, a teachable skill.

Longshot question of the day: Will a Dell Latitude 5490 laptop with the JXFX4 M'board support / recognize a M.2 SATA 2242 SSD in the WWAN M.2 slot? There is some discussion of this topic, specific to OTHER motherboards in this model on the Dell forum, and an unanswered question about this same M'board on the Dell forum. It appears that at least one M'board, the LA-F401P, does offer the use of a 2nd drive, specifically a M.2 SATA 2242 256 GB SSD, in the M.2 WWAN slot. But, I have the JXFX4 M'board, which also has a M.2 WWAN...

Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and former CEO of now-defunct crypto-lending firm FTX, denied that he was in a secret chat group called "Wirefraud," hours before his arrest in the Bahamas on Monday. Bankman-Fried responded to a tweet accusing him of being in the chat group saying: "If this is true then I wasn't a member of that inner circle. (I'm quite sure it's just false; I have never heard of such a group.)" The apparent chat group, based on encrypted messaging platform Signal, included members of FTX's inner circle, the Australian Financial Review reported first. Alongside Bankman-Fried, FTX's co-founder Gary Wang,...
