State Department to begin mass layoffs of about 1,800 employees in coming days

The State Department informed U.S.-based employees on Thursday that it would soon begin laying off nearly 2,000 workers after the recent Supreme Court decision allowing the Trump administration to move forward with mass job cuts as part of its efforts to downsize the federal workforce.

The agency's reorganization plan was first unveiled in April by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to eliminate functions and offices the department considered to be redundant. In February, President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing Rubio to revamp the foreign service to ensure that the president's foreign policy is "faithfully" implemented.

Employees affected by the agency's "reduction in force" would be notified soon, Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael Rigas told employees in an email on Thursday.

I don't usually applaud layoffs, but in this case, IMO it's a house cleaning of govt. workers who have cushy jobs.

The government is big and bloated and way too expensive. A reduction in staffing is long overdue.

So many waves of automation and efficiency that have swept the private sector in the past 20 years have had no impact on the public sector. AI will make it possible to extract even more efficiency from the federal administrative apparatus. When you hear Senators and Congressmen from the Beltway region bemoaning this, it’s only their concern for campaign donations.

1,800 out of how many?

Oh wait, ~80,000 worldwide that we KNOW of.

So 2.25%. Nothing burger.

Work for a big company like AT&T or IBM; 1,800 is just ‘turnover.’

This is only a drop in the bucket at the Foggy Bottom. More needs to be laid off. And I am not crying for these people since I have been laid off in the private sector a few times.

if this layoff can include the snake department’s embedded Nazis (and not just the lowest-seniority clericals in the visa bureau), there will be celebrations galore!

About 2.6% of their workforce.

Plenty more to go.
