"Of all the talents bestowed upon men, none is so precious as the gift of oratory . . . Abandoned by his party, betrayed by his friends, stripped of his offices, whoever can command this power is still formidable." - Winston S. Churchill "(I) won a nickname, 'The Great Communicator.' But I never thought it was my style or the words I used that made a difference: It was the content. I wasn't a great communicator, but I communicated great things." – Ronald Reagan "Don't tell me words don't matter! 'I have a dream'-- just words? 'We hold these truths...

Of all the pitfalls Barack Obama might face in the presidency, here is one not many people predicted: He is struggling as a public communicator. The sluggish and unsteady response to the uproar over AIG bonuses highlights a larger problem of his White House: Obama’s surprisingly uneven campaign to educate the public about the economic crisis and convince the public that he is in command of circumstances. It is certainly not as bad as it has been, or as it might be. The intensity and duration of this unpopularity is not unique. Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton aroused similar emotions. Only Nixon did not recover from this after his presidency (although his foreign policy skill has been vindicated). What did Presidents Truman, Reagan and Clinton have in common? They were good...

The title of this new book on Reagan--The GREATEST Communicator, by Dick Wirthlin--got me thinking: If Wirthlin's book title is apt, that means Reagan was a better communicator than Lincoln. But what I want to know is...

Word is The Washington Times has called this book--THE GREATEST COMMUNICATOR by Dick Wirthlin--among the best Reagan biographies ever written. Wirthlin is apparently giving a big speech at the national conference for Young America's Foundation in Washington DC this August (www.yaf.org).
