The President's Tin Ear
The Washington Times ^ | March 10, 2006 | Barry Casselma

Posted on 03/10/2006 5:08:46 AM PST by ReleaseTheHounds

Once again, President Bush's popularity has gone down, this time to near its previous bottom. His friends and supporters are dismayed, especially since the economic and other news is not that bad. It is certainly not as bad as it has been, or as it might be. The intensity and duration of this unpopularity is not unique. Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton aroused similar emotions. Only Nixon did not recover from this after his presidency (although his foreign policy skill has been vindicated). What did Presidents Truman, Reagan and Clinton have in common? They were good communicators, and they had an ear for what the American public thought and felt (although they often went against what political pundits told them was what Americans thought and felt). The worst thing an American politician can have is a tin ear.

I think this commentator pretty much nails it with this analysis -- maybe the title is wrong and it should refer to the President's "tin tongue" because of his inability or unwillingness to go on the communication offensive to support his policies. If the Dems were more skilled, I think we'd really be in trouble. As it is, hopefully the Administration will recover the way it did with the stupid Harriet Meiers nomination. Let's hope.

Looking at President George W. Bush's overall job performance this term, what grade would you assign to him?
Choice Votes Percentage of 1535 Votes
A 70 5%
B 89 6%
C 114 7%
D 249 16%
F 1013 66%

Post here:

Well Done Whiners. Way to pretty much guarantee the Democrats will take the US Senate back this year. The ONE issue the Republicans had the edge on was National Security. Way to take a Democrat Senate Election year ploy and feverishly propagandize it. Way to mindlessly regurgitate the lies, disinformation and guilt by association being pumped out by Chucky Schumer and the Democrats PR Machine. Spare us the pseudo Conservatism, Actions speak louder then words.

The level of rabid ignorance and hysteria demonstrated by the Port Deal Critics is utterly inexcusable. Let's not kid ourselves here. The Port Deal Hysteria had NOTHING to do with National Security, the facts or better ideas. It had to do with the Whine All The Time Choir being mad at Bush. Since they were mad, they keep searching for new things to have a hissy fit about. The latest thing was the Port Deal.

The opposition to the Port Deal had NOTHING to do with facts, reason or data. It had to do with an emotionally hysteric temper tantrum. The Whiners were simply desperate to "Get even with Bush" for spending or immigration or whatever; so they did NOT even bother to learn a single fact.

Only problem is this hissy fit is going to pretty much destroy the Republican Majority. The ONE thing the Republicans had going for them was the National Security Issue. The Whiners have all thrown that away by rabidly regurgitating the Democrats PR Port Talking Points. Well done. Way to actively work to elect Democrats. Congratulation. Rush Limbaugh was the Majority Maker, you knee jerk whiners will be remembered as the Minority Creators.

hopefully the Administration will recover

I guess it's not really necessary that Bush improve his popularity. It would be nice if he could pass just a couple more initiatives through Congress but this is going to be increasingly difficult as Republicans jockey for 08. Expect more of these breaks with the White House over the next couple of years.

Let's face it - with all the socialism and corruption that is part and parcel of the modern GOP, the amazingly thorough incompetence of the Democrats is the only reason the GOP has power at all.

Keep preaching it brother. These so called Republicans need to hear the truth, whether THEY like it or not. As TO WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT...

As Rhett Butler said, "FRANKLY MY DEAR, I DON'T GIVE A DAMN"!

Please don't shoot the messenger (poster) on this -- I agree with your points and felt the Port deal was fine on the facts and the national security aspects. But this was the third major mess the Administration has "allowed" (Katrina, Meiers, Ports) without having any kind of coherent communications campaign.

Scott McClellen should be gone by now -- I'd love to see Ari Fleischer come back. We also miss Karen Hughes being right next to the President... bring her back. I'm frankly surprised Karl Rove has let some of these screw-ups happen.

Which is exactly what most of the anti-UAE people here want.

Anything to screw the GOP even if it means destroying the U.S. in the process.

You can not blame other people for the mistakes of the administration. Gw is the leader and as a leader he has to take responsibility for the handling of this debacle.

The assumption that it should have been obvious that the Dubai terminals deal was a political hot potato just doesn't cut it with me.

That many Republican "issues groups" jumped on it to appeal to frightened bigots for their unrelated "causes" caught everyone by surprise.

Of course from now on the anti-moslem bigotry that's grown in the "conservative" blogosphere should be factored in by politicos.

This is not about public policy. I have defended Mr. Bush's policies in the Middle East and his long-term vision, and I continue to do so. His attempts to reform Social Security and create health-savings accounts are on the right track.

For me it is all about policy. Until Bush gives up on Shamnesty I am going to attack him every time he shows a weakness because a weak lame duck President will be less able to implement a shamnesty and that seems to be the only thing left on his 2nd Term Agenda.

Only problem is this hissy fit is going to pretty much destroy the Republican Majority.

You mean there's a chance we'll get rid of that bunch of irresponsible, clueless, gutless spendthrifts? Great! The country may yet survive. A few years of Democratic control followed by the renaissance of a chastened Republican party sounds a lot better than 'more of the same'.

So you are in favor of the Gold card guestworker program?
(which is actually an amnesty).

What is the point of giving a man the bully pulpit if he has no talent for it, and no desire to do the job.
