You'll be forgiven for stifling a yawn as we delve into the details of yet another Cannonball record. And although the overall New York City-to-Redondo Beach, California record has allegedly been broken again by some folks who have not yet emerged from the shadowy world of hearsay and conjecture, that's not the one we're going to tell you about today. What we're here to talk about is a record that's so stupid it's brilliant, and so crazy it's just about what we've come to expect as the elapsed times on these ill-advised adventures have crept ever closer to the 24-hour...

The highways and byways of America have been eerily quiet over the past several weeks thanks to responsible citizens doing their best to remain indoors and limit unnecessary travel. Meanwhile, a small group of highly irresponsible drivers have taken these open stretches of asphalt as a sign that they should drive as fast as possible from one coast to the other. That’s right, it’s high time to revive the Cannonball Run Challenge, which you may remember from that cruddy Burt Reynolds comedy. In a recent video, former Cannonball Run record holder and éminence grise Ed Bolian reported that, over the...

A team of scofflaws has apparently taken advantage of the dramatic reduction in traffic across America due to the coronavirus pandemic to set a new coast-to-coast driving record. According to Ed Bolian, who set a record in 2013 when highway congestion was normal, the Audi A8 completed the “Cannonball Run” from New York to L.A. in 26 hours and 38 minutes, beating the 27 hours 25 minutes mark set last November by Arne Toman and Doug Tabutt. Traffic analytics company Inrix has reported that congestion is down nearly 50 percent on average in the U.S. due to stay-at-home policies. Bolian...

Country music singer Mel Tillis, whose six-decade career included hits such as “I Ain’t Never” and “Coca Cola Cowboy” and who never let his stutter get in the way of him becoming a legend, died on Sunday, his publicist confirmed. He was 85. Tillis passed away at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla., his publicist Don Murry Grubbs said. The music legend is believed to have died from respiratory failure after he never recovered from intestinal issues he has been battling since 2016. He leaves behind his longtime partner, Kathy DeMonaco, his six children and six grandchildren. Tillis recorded...

Brock Yates, Car and Driver’s Assassin, lost his long battle with Alzheimer’s on October 5, 2016. We take solace in the words he crafted for this publication, his screenplays, and his books, a legacy that long ago became permanent and prominent chapters of the American legend... Yates joined Car and Driver in 1964, as managing editor—although he claimed no experience in either managing or editing... Yates created the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in 1971, a coast-to-coast public road race...

Flight controllers are unable to receive data from unmanned Progress M-27M – and the only way to regain control would be an ultra-risky ‘manual stablilisation’ carried out by the ISS crew. But a Russian space program analyst said: “Trying to stabilise it manually would be extremely risky. You could destroy the station and kill the crew.” The spacecraft is carrying more than 6,000lb of food, fuel and supplies for the ISS crew – which is currently home to Russian and American astronauts. The M-27M was launched via a standard Soyuz rocket at 8.09 a.m. GMT today (1.09 p.m. local time...

The Colorado State Patrol is on alert today for cars zooming west on Interstate 70, participants of the Cannonball Run, a race from the East Coast to the West Coast. The local office of the State Patrol was notified by teletype today from Denver to be on the lookout for an array of fast-moving cars. “We got people out looking for them and an aircraft up looking for them in case we have to do some speed enforcement,” said Troy Marvel, communications officer for the State Patrol. The State Patrol is looking for fast-moving exotic cars such as Porsches, Maseratis...

As an American citizen and a liberal Democrat I feel as though I have been kicked in my political gut and left breathless as a result of Tuesday's election. How President Bush could possibly campaign on making the tax cuts permanent and repealing the so called "death" tax to the detriment of the Social Security (which he promised not to touch) and Medicare trust funds and to the benefit to tax payers earning over $350,000 (the "truly" rich and greedy) while the deficits will stretch from here to the moon and beyond and will add billions and billions of dollars...
