The Republican-led House Committee on Homeland Security is challenging an Obama administration plan to admit Syrian refugees to the United States, saying it could allow potential terrorists to sneak into the country. In a letter sent to the White House, Michael McCaul, who chairs the Homeland Security Committee and Peter King and Candice Miller, who chair subcommittees, said the administration's plan "raises serious national security concerns." The letter, dated Wednesday, said the United States lacks the resources to fully investigate the backgrounds of refugees from Syria, a base for Islamic State militants, before they are admitted to the country.

    Roll Call ^ | October 17, 2013 | David Hawkings
All of the congressional Republicans with viable 2016 presidential ambitions voted against the bill enacted overnight to reopen the government and increase federal borrowing. So did two members of the Senate GOP leadership and three members of the party’s House leadership. The opponents also included a majority of the Republicans who are chairmen of House committees and most of the members of the House GOP caucus who aspire to election to the Senate next year. While the Democrats were unified in their support for the legislation, a review of Wednesday night’s back-to-back roll calls in Congress reveals just how divided...

John Engler, largely based on superior name recognition, is the top choice of Michigan Republicans to take on Debbie Stabenow in 2012. Among the more likely roster of potential GOP contenders Pete Hoekstra is the leader by a good margin with only Mike Cox also hitting double digits. 31% of Republican voters say Engler would be their first choice, followed by 24% for Hoekstra, and 12% for Cox. Rounding out the Republicans polled is Terri Lynn Land at 7%, Candice Miller at 5%, Mike Rogers at 4%, Thad McCotter at 3%, and Tim Leuliette at 0%. If Leuliette, who has...

Candice Miller announced earlier this week she would run in 2006 for another term in Congress rather than jump into the governor's race, but a recent poll suggests she would have been a strong opponent to Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm. The poll conducted Aug. 2 through Tuesday and released Thursday by Lansing-based EPIC/MRA shows the former Michigan secretary of state easily outdistancing Ada businessman Dick DeVos in a GOP gubernatorial primary. It also shows that Miller at this point would pose much more of a threat to the Democratic governor, with 47 choosing Granholm and 45 percent Miller in a...

U-S Rep. Miller hints at challenge to Granholm MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. Congresswoman Candice Miller is hinting that she might try to unseat Governor Granholm in 2006. Miller, a Republican from Macomb County's Harrison Township, says she thinks Democrat Granholm is beatable. She says she has several months to decide whether to run for governor. The 51-year-old Miller was elected to Congress in 2002 after serving two terms as Michigan Secretary of State. She tells the "Macomb Daily" newspaper of Mount Clemens that Granholm is vulnerable because of Michigan's high unemployment and the loss of thousands of manufacturing jobs. Three other...

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers and U.S. Rep. Candice Miller issued the following statements regarding John Kerry’s selection of John Edwards as his running mate: “Michigan voters are too savvy to fall for the flip-flop of candidate Kerry who said he wanted a vice presidential nominee who can be president, then selected someone he had already identified as unqualified. Edwards has not even completed one full term of public service, and from the perspective of actual public service, he is the least qualified of any one who has served as vice president in the past century. “Much...
