As COVID-19 vaccines are being rolled out, an extremely vulnerable group is being overlooked: millions of cancer patients. Doctors nationwide are sounding the alarm that many state governments and the federal advisory committee charged with prioritizing who gets vaccinated should move cancer patients up to the front of the line, right after nursing home residents and frontline health care workers. Right now, they're deemed a lower priority than "essential workers" such as firefighters and mass transit employees. Yet cancer patients are getting decimated by COVID-19. New data from 360 U.S. hospitals show that patients with cancer are more at risk...

TAMPA (WFLA) – Moffitt Cancer Center is notifying patients that a briefcase containing personal patient information was stolen from a physician’s car in July. According to the cancer center on July 4, Moffitt learned about the potential breach that affected over 4,000 patents. The briefcase contained two personal storage devices, which were not encrypted, and printouts of clinical schedules, according to a patient notice posted Sept. 2 on Moffitt’s website. The information included patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and some information about what kind of medical treatment those patients received at Moffitt. Moffitt says patients social security numbers...

Third Way, a progressive think tank with ties to the Democracy Alliance, has removed newly appointed Ebola czar Ron Klain from its website, following a Washington Free Beacon report. The Free Beacon reported Friday on Klain’s status as a trustee for Third Way, and his past experience lobbying on behalf of a drug company that was accused of denying life-saving drugs to dying cancer patients. The choice of Klain to head the administration’s emergency response to Ebola was criticized as a political move. Klain is a political operative with no medical experience and a former advisor to former Vice President...

For working people making modest wages and struggling with high medical bills from chronic disease, President Barack Obama’s health care plan sounds like long-awaited relief. But the promise could go unfulfilled. It’s true that patients with cancer and difficult conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Crohn’s disease will be able to get insurance and financial help with monthly premiums. But their annual out-of-pocket costs could still be so high they’ll have trouble staying out of debt. You couldn’t call them uninsured any longer. You might say they’re “underinsured.” These gaps “need to be addressed in order to fulfill the intention...
