I just did something that made me feel so good that I had to share it with everyone. While poking around looking for references to Bill Clinton's Initiative on Race, I clicked on a link at the PBS "Newshour" website: ( Click here if you wish to recreate my enjoyable experince) and was confronted with this wonderful message: "Please note: many files associated with the previous administration have been removed from this server. Some materials may be available through the National Archives and Records Administration website." Click here to see for yourself.

Gore Takes His Case to Public as Bush Prepares Transition Monday, November 27, 2000 Al Gore took his case to the American public Monday night, asking for a "single, full and accurate count" of the votes in Florida and saying he is contesting the tallies in three counties because "ignoring votes means ignoring democracy itself." In a short, nationally televised speech, Gore maintained that many votes had not been counted and alleged that "organized intimidation" stopped the count in one county. He said the voting process is important in order for the American people to know they're equal. "They're equal, ...

Officials consider limit of one beer keg per household ASSOCIATED PRESS Hoping to curtail loud parties and underage drinking in the college town of Winona, city officials are considering an ordinance to penalize residents caught with more than one keg of beer in their homes. Under the proposal, which will go before the City Council in a few weeks, residents caught with more than one keg in their homes could be charged with a misdemeanor and face up to $700 in fines and 90 days in jail. About 9,000 students attend St. Mary's University and Winona State University. ``The idea ...

Al the Humble Over the past few months, our Vice-President has been (I believe, unjustly -- and you will, too, after seeing the evidence) accused of having a penchant for prevarication, or at least, hyperbole. We are probably most aware of his alleged claim to have invented the internet. (This quote was, of course, taken out of context, and blown all out of proportion.) What may surprise many of you right-wing detractors is that the truth about Mr. Gore is quite the opposite. A bit of web research (which any of you could have done, had your minds not been ...

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Maryland requires all public high school students to do volunteer work to graduate. How those students donate their time is largely left up to them. So 18-year-old Scarlett Swerdlow decided to pass on the government internships and homeless shelters to work for a cause she fully supports: legalizing marijuana. The Walter Johnson High School senior got permission from her school last semester to fulfill her service requirement by doing clerical work and research for the Marijuana Policy Project. ``I think there's definitely irony, but it's good,'' Swerdlow said. ``I think it's important that students and ...

ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) -- Joan Johnson is insulted when people ask why she's a Republican. ``This is a question that's never asked of a white person,'' snaps Johnson, who jumped into the race for Rep. Rick Lazio's House seat when the Long Island congressman decided to challenge Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Senate. ``It says to me that in America, the majority race thinks that blacks are assigned to one party, and that's an insult,'' she says. ``Because people can get off the boat from China, Vietnam or any place and be anything they want to be. But if I'm ...

Officials to respond rapidly to Y2K glitches WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal officials said Wednesday they are prepared to respond quickly and can draw on resources from as many as 26 federal agencies and the Red Cross if any Y2K emergencies arise this weekend. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has established 10 regional centers around the country to monitor any potential difficulties in the United States or U.S. territories. Beginning Thursday, FEMA will have its emergency support team in full gear 24 hours a day through Jan. 2. Roughly 800 personnel will be working through the weekend. "FEMA is confident ...

Boston created job, hired an ex-colleague Residence hall employee already had NCAA violations GEORGE DOHRMANN STAFF WRITER University of Minnesota vice president McKinley Boston created a special position in a residence hall last year and gave it to a former University of Wisconsin NCAA compliance director who resigned after breaking the rules he was supposed to help enforce. Anthony Adams, who was among the more than a dozen Badgers officials who broke NCAA rules by improperly spending booster-club funds, was hired last October to a 10-month position that paid $35,000. He was given use of an apartment in Wilkins ...

Rangel resigns as Apollo Theatre board chairman 10.43 a.m. ET (1447 GMT) September 14, 1999 By Beth Gardiner, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Rep. Charles Rangel has resigned as chairman of the board of the Apollo Theatre, bringing the troubled Harlem landmark a step closer to a deal that would put Time Warner in charge of its revival. Actor Ossie Davis was expected to succeed Rangel. Rangel's resignation, announced Monday, was among conditions state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer set last month when he tentatively agreed to drop a lawsuit alleging financial mismanagement by the board of the famed theater, which ...

In the Fall of 1994, I wrote the following paper for a course at the Iliff School of Theology on Cults, Sects, and Religious Movements. The following is Copyrighted by Paul Broyles 1997. Few people will ever forget the morning of February 28, 1993 when agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF) raided a small compound near Waco Texas. For it was on this day that four law enforcement agents lost their lives to a group of religious fanatics known as the Branch Davidian Seventh Day Adventist (BDSDA) 1. February 28th also marked the started of ...

Preschool in the Nanny State Jewish World Review MAKE NO MISTAKE: The push for universal preschool is on. Already the state of Georgia offers free preschool to every 4-year-old, and New York is phasing in a statewide system. Legislators in California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey are itching to follow suit. If Al Gore is elected president in 2000, this state-by-state expansion could be preempted by a federal mandate. As the vice president recently told a Denver audience, "If you elect me president, I will make high-quality preschool available to every child." Naturally, public officials hedge when asked whether preschool should ...
