The fringe left was out in all its glory in San Francisco on Saturday (6/5), marking the anniversary of Israel's 1967 war. International A.N.S.W.E.R. organizers also managed to lump Iraq into the equation, with the blanket statement, ''End All Occupations!'' And just to cover their bases, the banner above the stage read, ''U.S. Troops Out of Everwhere!'' The banner also called for the U.S. to ''End the Torture'' and of course, there were many references to Abu Ghraib throughout the day. But all in all, it was a pitiful display and the best they could turn out was 4000-5000 people....

There’s been a lot of talk since 9/11 about anti-Muslim and anti-Arab discrimination, and yet according to actual hate crime statistics, it is Jews who have had the most to fear. According to the FBI’s Hate Crimes Statistics Report for 2002, there were 155 anti-Islamic incidents and 931 anti-Jewish incidents. And as anyone who follows these developments knows, the majority of these anti-Jewish acts were perpetrated by Arabs and/or Muslims. Black History Month 2004 has just passed. I looked all month for national recognition of conservative blacks. I found very little. Since the Vietnam War, whenever the U.S. is engaged in a conflict that stretches beyond the time allotted to it by the media, they call it a quagmire. The time frame that qualifies a conflict as a quagmire, has been getting progressively shorter. This pattern reached truly ridiculous proportions during the brief war in Afghanistan, which was dubbed a quagmire after about two weeks. And in the case of the war in Iraq, it took about seven days for the naysayers to start intoning the "Q" word. The complaints of pro-American bias against the embedded reporters in Iraq, that came not two days into the war, were stunning in their predictability. After all, these are the same people who would be complaining about a lack of access, if the reporters weren’t allowed to accompany the troops. Once again, it’s the damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t crowd up to their old tricks again. The tragic incident in Najaf on Monday, where U.S. soldiers were forced to fire on a vehicle, resulting in the deaths of seven women and children, will no doubt add fuel to the fire of anti-Americanism. What will be lost in the hand-wringing is the fact that if it weren’t for the dishonorable methods of some Iraqi fighters, Coalition soldiers would not be compelled to respond in this manner. Being bereft of hate crimes against Muslims to report, the Chronicle finally turned its attention to the rise of anti-Semitism across the nation, and in particular the Bay Area. Despite the fact that this has been a subject of concern for many since 9/11, the Chron has rarely addressed the issue. Even when Chron articles included so-called Hate Crime statistics showing that attacks on Jews had increased, they still buried the information under headlines that focused on anti-Muslim bias.
