The Safe House of Southeast Missouri, the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence (SEMO-NASV) and the Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau released a joint statement Monday expressing "disappointment and disgust" at the choice of rap artists Eminem and Dr. Dre as halftime entertainment for Sunday's Super Bowl in Los Angeles. "The organizers probably did not give enough consideration to the content of their lyrics. They're frankly inappropriate and disrespectful and describe violence toward women to make it seem acceptable in society," said Jessica Hill, executive director of the Safe House of Southeast Missouri.

"Police are investigating an attack on a 12-year-old male Friday night in downtown Cape Girardeau. Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Joey Hann said at approximately 11:40 p.m., the juvenile was dancing on Main Street near Independence Street when a dark sports utility vehicle stopped in the westbound lane of Independence Street. An adult male passenger exited the vehicle and hit the juvenile in the head from behind. The suspect returned to the vehicle and quickly drove away."

Jackson police arrested an allegedly intoxicated man who was accused of racing riding lawn mowers with an associate Saturday night. Jeremy Tyson Cook, 35, of Jackson is charged with felony driving while intoxicated as a chronic offender. His bond was set at $35,000 cash or surety. Police responded about 1:30 a.m. to the area near the intersection of Greensferry Road and Maryland Street. A caller said two subjects were operating four-wheelers in a public roadway and being “extremely loud,” according to a probable-cause statement filed by Jackson police officer Jason Wilhelm. Woman killed when car hits deer Tuesday, January 5, 2016 ~ Updated 4:24 PM Hope Thompson, 49, of Sedgewickville, Missouri, was killed Jan. 4 when the car her daughter was driving struck a deer on Highway 72, three miles east of Patton, Missouri. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the deer crashed through the windshield of the 2012 Nissan Sentra driven by Rhiannon Thompson, 16, of Sedgewickville, striking both occupants. Hope Thompson was pronounced dead the scene. Rhiannon Thompson was taken by helicopter to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau in serious condition.

Three subjects were taken into custody today at the West Park Mall for openly displaying handguns, according to a news release from the Cape Girardeau Police Department. The news release said about 1:20 p.m., security officers at the mall contacted the police department to notify it of four subjects who had entered the mall, some with weapons.

Crew members of the tugboat Holy Angel are being called heroes after rescuing a 22-year old Cape Girardeau man from the Mississippi River, south of Cape Girardeau. The rescue took place at about 7 a.m. Thursday.
