  • My Bet

If I was a betting man, I would put my money on the following scenario: McCain is not popular among conservatives. No no. Not at all. He has the moderate to liberal vote wrapped up. Huckabee on the other hand has the evangelical vote sheerly because of which church he goes to. Depending on how the rest of this plays out...when Huck and McCain together have enough delegates combined to put McCain over the top, Huck drops out. Huck then becomes VP nominee thus giving the McCain ticket an inroad to pro life people and evangelicals. Any takers for this...
  • Monson Named New Mormon President

    02/04/2008 5:42:31 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 5 replies · 106+ views
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Thomas S. Monson, a leader who became known for his folksy storytelling as he ascended through church ranks, was introduced Monday as the 16th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Monson, 80, succeeds Gordon B. Hinckley, who died last month at age 97. Out of respect for the deceased president, the Mormon church never names a successor until after funeral services. Hinckley was buried Saturday. The church relies on a pattern of apostolic succession in selecting a new president. Since the early part of the 20th century, the position has always...
  • Primary Question

    02/04/2008 12:40:53 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 15 replies · 567+ views
I am making assumptions here but I do have some questions about procedures etc. Lets assume tommorrow does not break hard one way or another for McClame or Romney... Lets say those two split things almost right down the middle. Now lets also say that Huckabee pulls off a miracle and actually wins some delegates... and lets say he even wins a state...(arkansas)... But, if you do the math Huckabee would have no way to win the race, so he would probably drop out. If that happens then what happens to Huckabee's delegates (generally speaking) if he decides to drop...
  • Preserving Traditional Marriage: A View from the States (Mitt Romney)

    01/23/2008 9:16:40 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 72 replies · 19,123+ views
June 22, 2004 "Preserving Traditional Marriage: A View from the States" Testimony of Governor Mitt Romney Before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Mr. Chairman, Senator Leahy, Senator Kennedy, distinguished members of the Committee, thank you for asking me to join you today. First, I ask that my written remarks be inserted into the record of this hearing. You have asked for my perspectives on the recent inauguration of same sex marriage in my state. This is a subject about which people have tender emotions in part because it touches individual lives. It also has been misused by some as a...
  • Mitt and Abortion (vanity part 3)

    01/23/2008 8:39:32 AM PST · by maui_hawaii · 35 replies · 36+ views
This is part three of my vanity series on Mitt. What I have been doing is posting contextual and background information on Mitt as per my own analysis on each of the issues where people say they have 'concern'. As always everyone, pro or con is invited to participate but please stay on topic. In this one I want to talk about Mitt and abortion. This is one topic where some will accuse Mitt of being an utter left wing liberal who supports and is an abortion lover who was marching down the road with N.O.W. shouting 'free choice'. I...
  • Mitt Part 2 (Vanity)

Mitt was born in 1947 in Detroit Michigan. He was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This bit of information will tell you a substantial amount about Mitt’s upbringing and political leanings. Now let me expound. According to Wikipedia the land making up Bloomfield Hills is dominated by wealthy families. According to them famous people associated with the area are the likes of: • John Delorean (maker of Delorean cars) • Dominic Dimarco (President of Ford) • Joe Dumars (General Manager of the Detroit Pistons) • Aretha Franklin (no explanation needed) • Lee Iacocca (ditto) • Rodger Penske (Penske auto parts)...
  • Lies About Mitt's Record (vanity)

    01/21/2008 11:32:31 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 384 replies · 929+ views
I hear of the tag 'flip flop' being assigned to Mitt Romney by certain groups of people. What I want to do is pick one (for this example) of where these people who make this charge are incorrect. In doing so, I will respond to that caller who called in to Rush yesterday and wanted Rush to tell her 'where is the record of Mitt's conservatism'. I will answer her and all others in the process. Now for facts. Mitt was running in a very liberal state that is friendly to gays and in fact is the hotbed of gay...
  • THE END OF GLOBAL STRATEGY

    01/21/2008 5:46:54 AM PST · by maui_hawaii · 12 replies · 175+ views
Indiana University ^ | Alan Rugman
Abstract Recent research suggests that globalization is a myth. Far from taking place in a single global market, most business activity by large firms takes place in regional blocks. There is no uniform spread of American market capitalism nor are global markets becoming homogenized. Government regulations and cultural differences divide the world into the triad blocks of North America, the European Union and Japan. Rival multinational enterprises from the triad compete for regional market share and so enhance economic efficiency. Only in a few sectors, such as consumer electronics, is a global strategy of economic integration viable. For most other...
  • McCain's Bad Economics

    01/16/2008 7:18:40 AM PST · by maui_hawaii · 46 replies · 137+ views
I am a Mitt guy-with that being said I have no problems with Thompson at all. Prior to this last primary my pecking order went something like this: Mitt, Fred (which are interchangeable in the case of necessity), and if I was forced McCain. There would be no hope for Huckabee. I will not vote for him period. McCain though just dropped off my list and I will explain why. McCain is part of the problem in Washington, not the solution. It has been the likes of him and those congressmen like him who are too big of a ____________ to...
  • Question about Primaries

    01/08/2008 6:16:28 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 4 replies · 148+ views
Does anyone know where we can get actual poll data on the primaries (not just one of them, but all of them as they happen)? What I think is we need to look at raw data of both parties combined and look at how many voters voted... How many voted democrat in general, and how many voted for each candidate. This will tell us a whole lot. IMO. Does anyone know where we can find raw information like that? IE if a million people voted on the democrat side in XYZ state and only 100K voted on the republican side...at...

  • Mormon Beliefs

This post is a vanity (of sorts). It is geared toward Jim Robinson, the Moderators, and the sensible members of FreeRepublic. This is NOT about Mitt Romney. While Mitt is a Mormon he is not the religion itself. This is about at least one aspect of Mormonism that often comes up in a very inappropriate way. Discussion is fine, please go right ahead and discuss Mormons. However, in the rants and raves going on many people step completely out of line. Much of it is due to ignorance. A lot of people don’t consider them self ignorant, but none the...
  • BYU to give Cheney honorary degree

    04/25/2007 4:34:18 PM PDT · by maui_hawaii · 14 replies · 386+ views
PROVO — Brigham Young University will bestow on Vice President Dick Cheney an honorary degree Thursday when he speaks at the university's commencement exercises, a decision that further frustrated Cheney's opponents on campus. BYU and its board of trustees will give Cheney an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service and award honorary doctorates to four long-time university supporters. The other recipients are Ira Fulton, Honorary Doctorate of Engineering; Mary Lou Fulton, Honorary Doctorate of Education; and Jack R. and Mary Lois Wheatley, Honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters. A number of professors and students who either opposed Cheney's visit or welcomed the...
  • Romney Campaign Responds to Marriage Questions

    02/23/2007 4:45:14 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 41 replies · 497+ views
Here's my prediction. Don Federer will not receive an invitation to the Romney campaign Christmas party. (By the way, will I get one?) The pro-family leader ripped Romney on the marriage issue the other day saying that Romney could have done a whole lot more to prevent same sex marriage in Massachusetts after the infamous Goodrich decision handed down by the Massachusetts Supreme Court. You can read about it here. Now the Romney campaign has come back in full battle mode. Kevin Madden, his spokesman tells the Brody File that: "The Governor did everything in his power and went beyond...
  • Singapore hangs African drug traffickers despite protests

Singapore has hanged two convicted African drug traffickers after their appeals for clemency were turned down and despite protests from rights activists. Iwuchukwu Amara Tochi, 21, of Nigeria, and 35-year-old Okeke Nelson Malachy, who officials said was stateless, were hanged at Changi prison in the early morning as anti-death penalty campaigners held vigil outside. "The appeals of both Tochi and Malachy to the Court of Appeal and to the President (S.R. Nathan) for clemency have been turned down. Their sentences were carried out this morning at Changi Prison," the Central Narcotics Bureau said in a statement. Activists had been lobbying...

  • How the U.S. Sees Seoul's N.Korea Policy

    01/19/2007 6:25:54 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 14 replies · 284+ views
Former U.S. defense secretary William Perry appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday and said if South Korea and China reject the option of pressuring North Korea, the only decisive measure left for the U.S. would be to destroy North Korea’s nuclear facilities. Perry said in retrospect, the most effective method of dealing with North Korea has been the use of negotiations backed by pressure. The ideal combination would be for South Korea and China to threaten halting supplies of oil and rice to North Korea if it does not stop building a large reactor. But South Korea...

  • China warning on Taiwan 'threat'

    12/29/2006 4:36:06 PM PST · by maui_hawaii · 3 replies · 378+ views
China has announced plans to upgrade its military, highlighting its dispute with Taiwan as one of several regional security threats. In a defence white paper, the government said it would focus its spending on strengthening the country's naval and air forces. But it said China would "not engage in an arms race". Meanwhile, Taiwanese legislators have been voting on a controversial and much-delayed US arms deal package. They agreed to send a portion of the $18bn (£9bn) deal to a budgetary committee, the Associated Press reports. From there, it must pass two more readings to become law. The vote came...
  • China claims Genghis Khan as its own

From outcast nomad to tribal warlord and finally founder of the world's greatest land empire, Genghis Khan went through a lot of changes in a tumultuous life spanning the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th. But perhaps the strangest transformation ever undergone by the Mongolian military genius has come in modern times: his reinvention as a Chinese hero. “Genghis Khan was certainly Chinese,” says Guo Wurong, general manager of the Genghis Khan Mausoleum Tourist District in China's Inner Mongolia region. “We currently define him as a hero of the Mongolian nationality, a great man of...
