Lived in Hyde Park for a year, used to watch ocean going vessels up and down the Hudson. One of my classmates showed me a picture of his grandfather next to an early model Ford, parked in the middle of the river, off of nearby Poughkeepsie. Made quite an impression on me !

When I lived in Huntington Beach in the 80s I had a job that took me into Compton on occasion. Also went to “IngleWatts” to see the Lakers and Kings. Moved farther south in 1990. During my time there, I was the rare White guy (except at The Forum) in a sea of Black faces. Last time I was in that area, the people were overwhelmingly Latino.

After college, I moved across country with three suitcases. My first apartment had a bed, an old couch, and a spool. In the fall, my team was in the World Series, so I bought a used TV and crate to perch it on. The good old days !

My brother had no interest in sports, whatsoever. Band and electronics, with a bit of motor vehicle repair, were his things. Moved to Maryland in 1988, took a side job tending bar. Guy walks in and asks for a gin and tonic. Had no idea who he was, but the aura around him was undeniable. People fell over themselves to pay for the drink, and he got a $5 tip (pretty good, back then). “ Who is Johhny Hugh ?” he asked the benefactor ;)

We missed a huge opportunity when the U.S.S.R. fell. Russia could have been our friend. When I was there in 1976 the average Ivan looked up to us, like a combination of a big brother (not 1984 style), and Superman. Look who Yeltsin’s opposite number was, here and no wonder Russia felt like they were being fleeced. Putin’s ascendancy was an unfortunate, but natural outcome.

Not buying the accusation. I still remember when Reginald Denny got beaten half to death, they stuffed the N Word into his mouth, ex post facto, to justify the outcome.

I keep waiting for saner voices to be heard. Not holding my breath, though.

I am solidly middle class. Comfortable, but not wealthy, by any stretch. In the last five years I personally know of millions of dollars in personal income, friends and family, that have left CA. Millions $

Years ago I took my Grandmother shopping, she handed the cashier a ten spot for an $18 purchase, and then berated him for not giving her change. I quickly made up the difference, but after that, my cousin was the shopping assistant.

Don’t forget the ones who don’t even think about taking the checkbook out until AFTER the sale has been rung up :)
