True story... when testing an aircraft carrier's main air search radar, it wasn't unusual seeing seagulls drop out of the sky when they intercepted the main beam. Microwaved sea rats...
You're referring to the Bo Rein crash on 10 January 1980 in a Cessna 441. I remember it well since he was the Wolfpack football coach while I was at NCSU.
I know this will not be a popular statement, but it's time to seriously consider closing DCA. Hear me out on this.
1. DCA places low-flying large airborne objects in close proximity to high value targets (the Pentagon, the three government branches (White House, Capital, Supreme Court), etc.
2. Approaches and departures are extremely limited in centerline deviation without much room for error.
3. Under shooting or overrunning a runway approach in such a dense urban environment will result in catastrophic events. Air Florida Flight 90 and the 14th Street Bridge comes to mind.
4. DCA has only one runway over 7k' long with two crossing runways of about 5k' long, which constrains air traffic.
Given all this, are the risks associated with operating DCA really worth the limited benefits, especially considering Dulles, out in the countryside, is just down I-66?
Has anybody addressed and/or resolved the observed booster fire observed just seconds before the grab? Held my breath on that one, considering previous Starship landing incidents of postlanding “rapid mechanical disassemblies”.
