Actor Gene Hackman arrives with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, for the 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Jan. 19, 2003, where he would receive the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Cecil B deMille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Legendary actor, two-time Oscar winner and author Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday afternoon in their home in the Santa Fe Summit community northeast of the city.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed just after midnight Thursday the couple had died, along with their dog.

Mendoza said in an interview Wednesday evening there was no immediate indication of foul play. He did not provide a cause of death or say when the couple might have died.

Hackman, 95, had lived in Santa Fe since the 1980s and married Arakawa, 63, in 1991.

Sad news. Natural gas leak? Hopefully accidental?

So many great films: Superman, Unforgiven, The Conversation, The French Connection, Young Frankenstein, etc. etc.

RIP, Gene!

His scene in Young Frankenstein is a classic - absolutely hilarious!

I would speculate it was carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty natural gas heater.

SO SAD :(! OMG!

Please forgive me for being ignorant, aside from carbon monoxide detectors -— is there someone or something that can be held accountable for things like this? Should there be?

Sad news. When I was a kid I loved the Superman movies, and Hackman was so funny in those. The first time I saw The French Connection I almost had a heart attack during the classic chase scene, it was so intense. May he rest in peace.

Speaking off the cuff here, I have seen situations where a contractor has come in to work on the fireplace and didn’t do something correctly with the exhaust or venting of the fireplace or the gas stove. Carbon monoxide`can built up and get the entire household unless someone catches it.
Had a friend wake up and go to the bathroom and noticed as he looked in the mirror that his skin was green and that started things rolling. He woke up the family and saved everyone’s life. Everyone had bad headaches for a day or two. Stove had been worked on that morning and wasn’t venting properly.

Very sad. Gene Hackman was one of the greats. But he was not long for this world. Had a seemingly good life and fantastic career. He has been missed since his retirement. 93 is a good run.

Very odd that the wife was also found dead. Maybe not foul play but something strange about that obviously. Could indeed be a gas leak or some other toxin exposure. Or maybe one died naturally and the other took his/her own life in grief.

Thank you. You answered my question.

Accountable: the home owner(s) <— residents

Failure to maintain. Failure to study how to maintain.

Failures by PRIDE-FUL maintenance service companies and their employees who claim to be “experts” with “expertise.”

Since the dog was also dead, I’m guessing carbon monoxide, the “silent killer”.

More importantly, situational awareness is paramount. It is so easy to assume the pros know what they are doing. You can’t sue them if you aren’t alive after the damage has been done. Workers at my house and business know final payment is contingent on MY final inspection and approval.

A gas leak is easily detected. Carbon monoxide is odorless.
