John Landsteiner, who competed with the U.S. Curling team in early 2018, got his ring back in Huntington Beach after flying in from Duluth, Minnesota. He also got the chance to meet the man who located the ring. Leon Jones of Buena Park made the discovery during one of his usual outings with his metal detector and then contacted the Olympian via FaceTime. Landsteiner said he came to California for the ESPY Awards and lost the Olympic ring when he visited Huntington Beach.

More California cities may consider defying the state’s “sanctuary state” laws, after the city council of Los Alamitos passed an ordinance defying the state’s controversial new legislation preventing cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Leaders of Los Alamitos, in Orange County, passed the ordinance 4-1 and instructed the city attorney to file an amicus brief in the ongoing Department of Justice lawsuit against the State of California. The presidents of America’s two largest unions have vowed to fight tooth and nail against a lawsuit now in front of the U.S. Supreme Court which, if successful, could strike down a California law permitting mandatory union membership. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit assert that the mandatory-dues law forces teachers to finance union political positions. Thus, the plaintiffs say, the law violates the First Amendment rights of teachers who disagree with the union’s politics. The Supreme Court granted certiorari for the suit, Friedrichs v.
