Bouguereau was the epitome of a French academy painter. Classically trained and meticulous in his work, he won awards and commanded high prices for his art. He painted over 600 paintings, which appear in museums around the world. Heavy on nudes, and peaceful and beautiful women and children, THIS type of art is what the Impressionists were rebelling against. Thomas Campion's poem, "The Peaceful Western Wind" is sung by Shannon Mercer.

William Adolfe Bouguereau, "Notre Dame des Anges." A long-standing lawsuit over the sale of a 19th-century painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau has been lost by New York State-based Catholic nuns who sued a Santa Fe, N.M., art dealer and a local art appraiser. In 2008, the nuns claimed that dealer Mark Zaplin and appraiser Mark LaSalle had colluded to defraud them of $1.7 million from the sale of their painting "Notre Dame des Anges," an 1889 work by Bouguereau depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child. The Daughters of Mary Mother of Our Savior and St Joseph's Chapel, in Round Top,...
  • The Early Church Fathers on the Immaculate Conception - Catholic/Orthodox Caucus

The Early Church Fathers believed that Mary was full of grace and thus sinless. Justin Martyr[Jesus] became man by the Virgin so that the course that was taken by disobedience in the beginning through the agency of the serpent might be also the very course by which it would be put down. Eve, a virgin and undefiled, conceived the word of the serpent and bore disobedience and death. But the Virgin Mary received faith and joy when the angel Gabriel announced to her the glad tidings that the Spirit of the Lord would come upon her and the power of...

The 150th anniversary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception is coming up this December, as is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. Are you interested in getting clear, concise material that helps spread Marian devotion? Take a look at: http://www.bridegroompress.com/guadalupe.htm and http://www.bridegroompress.com/snippets/Guadalupe.pdf As you can see from the excerpt, the 64-page book Artfully Teaching the Faith has an entire chapter devoted to explaining why the Guadalupe image had such an enormous impact on the Aztecs and how the image is interpreted. But it gets better. The book also describes 16 additional masterpieces of medieval...

Bouguereau at Workby Mark Walker To fully appreciate the art of Bouguereau one must profess a deep respect for the discipline of drawing and the craft of traditional picture-making; one must likewise submit to the mystery of illusion as one of painting's most characteristic and sublime powers. Bouguereau's vast repertory of playful and poetic images cannot help but appeal to those who are fascinated with nature's appearances and with the celebration of human sentiment frankly and unabashedly expressed. But it remains to understand, given Bouguereau's in many ways unique style, exactly what the artist was trying to represent. Although...

"...The art of painting, one of the greatest traditions in all of human history has been under a merciless and relentless assault for the last one hundred years. I'm referring to the accumulated knowledge of over 2500 hundred years, spanning from Ancient Greece to the early Renaissance and through to the extraordinary pinnacles of artistic achievement seen in the High Renaissance, 17th century Dutch, and the great 19th century Academies of Europe and America. These traditions, just when they were at their absolute zenith, at a peak of achievement, seemingly unbeatable and unstoppable, hit the twentieth century at full stride,...
